hello everyone and thank you for your help

Ok here is my problem and this is random also so i cant seam to recreate it. I have a Ati Radeon hd 5870 and when Im playing world of warcraft out of the clear blue my screen will freeze up and ill see lots of vertical lines but my computer isn't responsive. So ill restart it and itll work fine till that happens again. could be a couple of hours, days or even weeks. Every thing is updated, the bios is current, windows is up to date and my radeon is up to date 10.4.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Aaron

My first guesses would be:

1. Overheating, GPU itself or something else.
2. Unstable memory

These are what I would check first.

Thanks for the quick reply. Ive checked the temps and nothing gets over 67c. My computer isn't over-clocked. Is there a way to check to see if my memory is unstable?

If theres a memory problem it will be obvious.

Let it run at least a couple hours though, preferably overnight.

Hey guys i have the same problem as ghost187 i took mine back to the guys who built it they said it was the card so they sent it off for warrenty and its all good they say but first time i load up a game and the bars come back i tried the windows memory diagnotics program but it killed the pc twice attempting to run i left it on all of yesterday and last night and it just turned off the screens and took no response form my keyboard.......

any ideas as i got the ATi because i was told it was better or should i just swap to an nVidia as i used one while the ati was away and had NO problems at all??

the problem might not be the card have you tested it in other machines

Sometimes you can have a defective driver or possibly need to roll back the driver that was working fine

I wouldn't say the card isnt the issue but the temps you posted seem to be right on when using a device like a 5870

I would eliminate problems one by one if you have a onboard already see if it is turned on that could be messing with you as well

if not try the onboard see if it does the same thing sometimes it is a much deeper issue then the card or ram the board could have a bad slot on it as well

If it is trully the card rma and get a new one if it continues then it has to be a different issues also a weak psu will give you those types of results too

Drivers for ATI are 10.10 I think atm..10.4 is out of date and thats for sure..check the amd/ati site and download the catalyst package..my 5850 runs wow in its sleep...at least if nothing else you can eliminate the cards drivers as being the issue.
