atikmdag.sys and watchdog.sys BSOD

I have an HP Pavilion g6 – it was bought within the last 6 months. Lately I keep getting the BSOD often. There are 2 issues that cause the BSOD – one is atikmdag.sys and the second (much less often) is watchdog.sys. I have downloaded the latest version of atikmdag.sys but even that does not help. I have run driver scans to make sure all my drivers are up to date. My system configuration and the 2 BSOD files are attached. I notice I got the first BSOD on Feb 4th (after owning the computer about 5 months and taking it over from a colleague at work) – I just don’t remember what changes I made then that started the issues. I have noticed that there are suggestions which say to unload the AMD Catalyst Center – I dont think I have that but I have what is called the AMD Vision Engine Control Center V12.1 dated Feb 7, 2012. My Atikmdag.sys driver is dated Sep 28, 2011. I have run and cleaned my registry with Paretologic and it shows up with no errors. I also notice that the BSOD appears far more often at the office where I run the laptop with a second screen – rather then when I take the laptop home and run it without a second screen (although it also occurs then). Also There is the possibility -- and I dont know how to measure it right at the moment of the BSOD that the computer crashes when CPU temperature exceeds 58 degree C. I use Piriform Speccy to monitor the computer and a couple of times I have noticed that the temp had risen to 58 degrees (and appeared to be rising) when I walked away from my desk and it had crasehd when I returned. If there is no simple easy fix I would like to replace the video card in the laptop – any suggestions here – I do mainly general office work on the computer with two screens (laptop plus one more) and I am a significant Adobe Photoshop user as well with large files. Any suggestions – help!

Thanks! :)

After debugging about 7 dumps, they all point to the same thing, which is atikmdag.sys (ati video driver). Please uninstall your current ATI/AMD drivers, and then update to the latest version which can be downloaded here.

Drivers that may need to be updated:

ckldrv.sys - ckldrv Mon Mar 17 12:46:29 2008 (CrypKey software). Update here.

fsvista.sys - fsvista Tue Mar 18 02:37:07 2008 (F-Secure Vista Support Driver). Update here.

Thank you very much
I had the latest versions of atikmdag.sys -- but i went to the site and downloaded an reinstaleld the latest ATI / AMD drivers. I still get random BSOD's.
Does this help: 1) went to the Microsoft DirectX site and tried to download the latest version of DirectX to update mine and it just would not install. Kept giving me an error message.
2) The BSOD's happen far more frequently when I have a second monitor hooked on (at work) than when I only have the laptop screen on (at home).
3) I downloaded the basic version of PCMark7 a pc benchmarking test Download PCMark 7 - Complete PC test for Windows 7 | PCMark and I cannot run the test -- a BSOD appears on the first pass of the video test. This happens repeatedly at the same point.
Any more thoughts? I really appreciate your comments - help -- I am totally inexperienced on this.

What is the error you're getting trying to install the latest version of DirectX?

Can you please also attach the latest BSODs you've gotten (specifically the ones when trying to run the video test)?

Then I get the messaage "Installation Failed". I cannot find the DXerror.log at all on the computer but the DirectX.log is in the Windows folderand attached.

Are you trying to use the web installer? If so, try the actual installer itself. Download: DirectX Redist (June 2010) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

Both of the dump files that you've attached there blame the DirectX driver. Also, it mentions the inability to load symbols and a timestamp for mctkmd64.sys. Most likely belongs to a Magic Control Technology UVTP100 USB to VGA adapter. I couldn't locate any drivers, so if you have this, I'd recommend removing the program that uses this driver for diagnostic purposes.

Ok thanks -- I downloaded the actual installer itself and it installed. I will now run the Video test again. I got so fed up with the BSOD's that I thougt I would load the Magic Control Technology UVTP100 USB to VGA adapter software on my laptop and try using it today. I had it running on another computer at the office. So far using the USB to VGA adapter all day I have not had a single BSOD. Usually by now I would have had at least a couple. Will advise re the video tests.

no crashes so far -- but tomorrow, all day, I will have it on the second external monitor using the laptops vga connector. Lets see if it crashes then. Will know by end of day if it has worked. Thanks all your help.

My pleasure, if it crashes with the vga connector, it's probably more than likely related to that connector being the issue itself. If it does, I recommend trying it without the connector for awhile and seeing how things work out.

Best of luck :)
