Please download GPUz (GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility) and post a screenshot of the first page. On the main page, about half way down on the right you will see 'Bus Interface' and a question mark next to it. Tell me what it says when you first open it up. Then click the question mark and start the render test and tell me if it changes, and what it changes to.

Hovering on the "Bus Interface - PCI-E 1.1 x16 @ x2 1.1" says that the video card supports PCI-E 1.1 x16 @ x2 1.1 but is running on PCI-E 1.1 x2 @ x2 1.1. Is this what you wanted?

About the test - how long should I wait? Ran it for a minute or two, nothing changed.

yes, your video card is running at X2 and should be running at X16 What slot is the card in? It should be in the X16 slot closest to the CPU.

Is this your Motherboard? If so, you only have 1 X16 slot.

You need to find someone who will loan you a GPU to test. Also, please go to BIOS and give me the values of your +12V, +5V and +3.3V.

Yes, this is it. About the values - I couldn't find the 5v one, but the other ones are 12.048 and 3.30.

I'll try to find another GPU.

Today the computer woke up normally.

Those values are good. I would just borrow a card and not buy one. It could be the card or the motherboard. You could try removing the card, blowing out the pcie slot with a can of compressed air and reinstalling the card.

I'll try in the next 12 hours (or so) with an old nvidia card and then'll get back to you. Is that ok?

Btw, yesterday the pc couldn't even be slept, waited a couple of minutes but it didn't 'turn off'. Just a black screen on the monitor. No BSOD occurred tho.

Ok, that will be good. I may try it a little longer unless you are having the same problem. Sometimes it is strictly a function of BIOS. But, I want to see if it is the card.

I would try everything. Just use it as normal and the things that caused your problems, do them much more often.

Hey, essenbe, sorry for the lack of replies (had some personal stuff to do).

I had some weird issue with my wi-fi USB, so I decided to try installing a wireless pci card (CN-WF511) to see if it'll fix it, but then the pc wouldn't boot at all. After removing the pci card, the pc is now able to boot. Unfortunately the BSOD issue came back again, but I guess it's better to go to safe mode, restart and then log in to Windows rather than having unbootable pc.

As far as the GPU goes, I found an old nvidia 8800 GT. However, this (now fixed) unbootable situation doesn't make me really happy ... swapping the amd for the nvidia shouldn't be a problem (it has been used on it before) but.. not sure if it'll boot again. Tbh, I'm sick of those problems (lesson learnt, never ever buy 2nd hand GPU) and I'm going to build myself a new PC "from scratch" in 2-3 months.

Would you still like me to try the nvidia? Or closing the thread is a better thing to do?

Edit: My BIOS Version/Date is Award Software International, Inc. F2, 4.1.2008. According to the official gigabyte page, there're quite a few updates. Perhaps updating the BIOS could help?

Yes, updating BIOS could help. Try the Nvidia card. First, download the Nvidia drivers for the NVidia card. Then, with the AMD card still installed, uninstall the drivers, reboot and run DDU selecting only ATI drivers as stated in this tutorial. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/83814-drivers-clean-left-over-files-after-uninstalling.html The only exception is instead of restarting, shut down. Swap the cards and install the NVidia drivers, using this tutorial. Only install the Graphics driver and PhysX.

You are at least running X16 instead of X2 like you were before. That may help you out. I know you will get better performance.

Possibly. It looks that way unless it wasn't seated correctly.

Well, not it says the ati is running at x1. Guess the problem is indeed in the card.

I doubt the bios update would anything..

Read the descriptions of the bios update. They usually tell what the update does. But, I am inclined to say it is the card unless you want to re seat it and see if it runs correctly. But, if you try that you need to get rid of all Nvidia drivers before you make the switch, then install AMD drivers for that card. If it still says X2, you need to reverse the process.
