audio capture

I want to capture the audio from my laptop and make that file a MP3. I used to use a program a long time ago with XP that I believe was called G2 Recorder. Is there similar software that I can use with Windows 7 ?

There seems to be a lot of media programs, so I turned to the board here to get some recommendations. I have been a Linux user for the last 3 years and I feel like such a newbie with Win 7.

I would like to recomend GoldWave. It does Mp3's, editing, ogg files lots of jazz.
