Audio CD ripping?

I am with a problem, still have 200-300 cds to rip and encode into mp3/mpc. Untill Windows 7, I had been using Exact Audio Copy with Lame (--alt preset -standard), but EAC does not work in Windows 7. Windows 7 freezes in a couple of seconds after a rip has been initiated - have tried with the native Windows ASPI layer or with the ASPI driver from Nero - same result.

If EAC is still not supported in Windows 7, what is the best (most secure) option to rip audio cds? I really want my rips to be as good as possible, which EAC provided before. The built-in Sonic ripping engine in Winamp does not work either.

Any other verified option? Thanks for any help.

I'm using EAC here and everything is fine...

Try to use with compatibility mode...

Hm, this sounds encouraging. Could you tell me which version you are using, and what is your configuration in Drive Options? I am using the latest V0.99 prebeta 5. Thanks for any help.

Hm. I will try it with burst mode, but it is not a very good option to rip. If not using Secure Mode, you don't use EAC to the most of it's abbilities. Would you please try if it works for you in Secure Mode ripping? Thanks a lot.

Yeah, when I get some time I'll give that a shot for you.

For me, ripping in burst mode is just fine as I typically rip the cd's as soon as I buy them....so there generally aren't scratches or so forth to deal with. Also I tend to buy cd's in batches...so I often want to get them ripped quickly...so I prefer the speed of burst mode.

And I typically listen to my ripped music as background music at work and with portable devices when I am on the go. Even if there were a small section with a very minor problem, the liklihood of me every hearing it is about one in a million.

I was able to rip an entire CD with SecureMode turned on without trouble. I'm also using the Lame encoder as well.

For reference, I am running the RC1 version of Windows 7 ultimate. It's the 64-bit version. My command line options for the External Compressor is as follows;
-V 2 --vbr-new %s %d

Fix for Windows 7 incompatibilities/bug report (eac v0.

This may not fix all win7+eac problems, but it got me on my

way.

The way EAC accesses directories appears to be partially

incompatible with windows 7. In particular, if EAC attempts to

access a non-existent folder or if EAC has insufficient

privileges to access a folder, the program crashes. It may also

have something to do with a buffer overflow/null pointer when

passing information to the windows dialog box -- I didn't

bother running a debugger.

The solution is to go through every dialog in the program that

requires a path and paste or type in an appropriate path. A "my

documents" folder for the extraction directory, the lame

folder+executable in the the compression section. You cannot

use the "browse…" button or the program will immediately crash.

If the EAC options/Directories/"Use This Directory" is not set

to a usable directory, EAC will always crash when attempting to

extract data. Do not leave it set to "Ask every time".

You must also set the Compression Options/External

Compression/"Program, including path, used for compression"

entry this way or lame will not run.

Hopes this helps some other people.

I actually found the solution. Hopefully this helps others. I

ended up right clicking, going to properties, selecting the

compatibility tab and checking "disabled visual themes" and the

windows now work without crashing the app.

Adobe Drive.

Several German users of EAC have installed Adobe Photoshop or

an Adobe Suite which comes with an software called "Adobe

Drive". It will allways be installed and can be disabled with

the Microsoft Sysinternals Tool Autoruns:

find function and search for "adobe drive" and disable all

autoruns used by Adobe Drive.

Disabling Adobe Drive fixes the crash on opening any "browse

folder" windows e.g. to select output folders and the crash on

clicking on "convert to MP3" and maybe other similar problems.

EAC is locking up as soon as I launch it.
I have a new PC with Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-Bit.
I am using the latest V0.99 prebeta 5 and also tried a recommended zipped version.
I have also have on my PC Adobe CS3 but can not find Adobe Drive - to remove it (it must just be with CS4).
I have tried installing the software to my one of my user folders.
Still no luck :-(


someone has put this on but I not great with PC's so I may have to do a bit of googling to find out what it all means:

If I put the aspi drivers in the EAC folder, EAC would open but CD drive would not recognize disks. Then had to reboot for drive to recognize disks.
Previously had all drives using AHCI.
Now have SSD and HDD using AHCI on one controller.
Moved CD drive to different SATA controller using IDE and it works."

I'd suggest something like Winamp -- it can rip to FLAC directly too so your CD's are in a LOSSLESS format from which you can make mp3's etc for portable players without losing the quality of your original music.

Winamp also uses the GRACENOTE systm for retrieving CD data -- it depends on what music you like but certainly for anything like Classical Music Gracenote is far better than freedb for labelling tracks.

You can always use something like MP3TAG to do final labelling or track re-numbering if you want (also works on FLAC files) although the rip information retrieved via Winamp is pretty good.

Even the free version of Winamp does a pretty good rip although it limits the rip speed to 8X max.

The cheap paid for version gives unlimited rip speeds --I've had speeds of up to 55X -- if the CD was ejected at that speed I think my neck would be sliced in two if I were in the way.

If you don't like FLAC it can rip to all sorts of other formats --but I really want to have my CD's saved in a LOSSLESS format.

Most MP3 formats while OK for a portable music player sound pretty horrendous when played through high quality sound gear especially at anything less than 128 kb -- hideous artifacts, clipping etc etc.

These don't matter at all when using cheap "bud earphones" on a portable music player but once you want to play into high quality gear and have the music sound the same as your original CD you really won't want to use the highly compressed mp3 format.

Incidentally with FLAC you can re-create or make new CD compilations as well with NERO --just install the codecs mega plugin (free).

I had the same problem and it disappeared as soon as I ran the program as an administrator
