Audio Splitting

I remembered in Vista I was able to default a device (Either my a) headset, b) speakers) and whatever program I opened after defaulting that device would play audio through whatever was defaulted. Now I can't seperate noises and everything chunks together in 7. There has to be a way to fix this. I can't talk on ventrilo, play a game and listen to itunes at the same time anymore comfortably. It really is ruining my gaming experience. Is there anyway to fix this?... Or break it :D

Hi and welcome to SF.

I'm not sure if you meant the playback devices or the recording device. But here is a possibility for the recording device :

In Windows 7 you can set two device : a recording device and a communication device. To do so, right-click on the speaker icon in the notification area then, "Recording devices". Right click on the Microphone entry and choose "Set as default recording device" or "Set as default communication device". If you chose the recording device for the microphone, select another device, right click then set it to the communication device.

Hope it helps.

Ah I meant playback sorry. I just liked in Vista how you could default to a device then launch an application and whatever you launch would play through your defaulted device. When I installed 7, it now takes every application (regardless of when launched) and either switches every application I have open between my headset or my speakers.

For example

Default Speakers

Launch Itunes/Msn

then I would default to my headset

Launch counterstrike, ventrilo.

The 2 sets were divided between my setup. Now it's piled all together :\

Hello Welcome to SF,

I guess the Application is taking control of the Device. Maybe you can try to uncheck that option. Right Click on you Device > Go To Properties > Under Advance you can see a check box "Allow application to take exclusive control of the device". Uncheck it and see whether that makes any difference
