Improvements and fixes

This non-security update includes improvements and fixes that were a part of KB4034664 (released August 8, 2017) and also includes these new quality improvements as a preview of the next Monthly Rollup update:

• Addressed an issue where spoolsv.exe crashes.
• Addressed issue where a DNS server stops working and doesn't respond to DNS requests in Windows Server 2008 R2.
• Addressed issue where WordPad crashes on launch.

Known issues in this update

Symptom
Due to a defect in WLDAP32.DLL, applications that perform LDAP referral chasing can consume too many dynamic TCP ports (potentially exhausting them) after installing KB4025337 and KB4025341. Applications and roles known to make these referrals may include Outlook.exe, DFSR, and others.

Workaround
To work around the problem, restart services or applications that perform LDAP referral chasing to free TCP dynamic ports. A reboot will also free ports. For example, restarting Outlook will free ports used by that application.

Symptom
If restarting applications that perform LDAP referral chasing returns normal functionality on machines that installed KB4025337 and KB4025341, you may be experiencing this issue.

Workaround
To work around the problem for cluster computers hosting the DFSR service, place the virtual cluster object under the Computers container to avoid reaching the referral chasing search, which leads to the dynamic port leak.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

uugghh IS that SERIOUSLY the best M$ can do... for an update that is 194MB (accumulative) <-- uggh
accumulative is ok if you don't have the last few months or non at all installed.. but I stay right up to date... ^_^
so yeah...

the download above was SUPER QUICK... on my 200Mb/s download bandwidth!
SO WHY IS IT that when I download the update through the regular windows update process... ITS SOOO SLOOOOWWW X( XD

The new KB4034670 is supposed to fix up issues with the previous KB4034664 but comes with its own issues. That's not very impressive!
So you've installed KB4034664 should you bother with KB4034670 or just wait for the next rollup?

I thought my install went fine when I did it yesterday. Restart was fine also. History said successful. This morning when I turned it on, I got really worried as it continued the installation? Was @ 35% for 5 minutes and then went to 100% and stayed there for a least an hour, no HDD activity.

Dis-obeyed MS and restarted my computer, now hung @ 35% and stayed there for 30 minutes. Had chores to do so I left it on and returned 3 hours later. PHEW!! normal desktop, history did not change from yesterday. Made an image and will see what happens. Seems normal at present.

I'd like to know what happened to MS rolling all the past patches into the rollups? That was announced a year ago now.
From my testing - so far I've discovered one past update that's been incorporated into the rollups - a universal C runtime update.

At this rate, by the time they've incorporated a substantial amount of them, Windows 7 will have reached EOL! So, what's the point??

There's nothing important about this preview update, especially if you haven't had any issues with the August update 4034664. If you've installed that without problem then ignore the unchecked and optional preview update 4034670, it's just a standard preview update and those are only intended for professional users with test environments - hence their being unchecked and optional.

I stopped taking all optional updates. They caused more problems than not.

LOL :-( I guess I'm just lucky then I apply all updates when I notice them thankfully it hasn't bricked my machines yet LOL

Agreed. I make a note of mine on my monthly list of offered updates but then I hide them. My monthly lists date back to October 2014 and not a single optional update has been installed in that time. Occasionally one will reappear as a recommended update in a later month in which case I'll review it if it's checked but hide it if is unchecked as no unchecked update should normally be manually checked and installed.

I don't even install optional updates on Windows 8.1 anymore either. Even though it has got until 2023 for EOL.

I'm working on my own install packages now which install like this:

1) WSUSOffline for all Security updates, IE11 and frameworks. Reboot.

2) Install remaining security/important updates (no rollups). Reboot.

3) Install Selective Recommended updates I choose (with checkboxes to select/skip the ones I want or don't want. Reboot.

Windows 7 installer is working okay, but the Windows 8.1 installer is proving more of a problem updating every month. As there's more rollups on 8.1

It's still a work in progress though!

I don't understand the logic either.

I only install important and recommended updates and don't bother with optional updates. I installed KB4034664 because it was classed as important. I wondered why I hadn't seen KB4034670 - because it was sitting in optional. Yet.....optional KB4034670 was supposed to fix up potential issues in important KB4034664.
