Improvements and fixes

This security update includes improvements and fixes that were a part of update KB4025340 (released July 18, 2017) and resolves the following issues:

• Security updates to Microsoft JET Database Engine, Common Log File System Driver, Microsoft Windows Search Component, Volume Manager Driver, Internet Explorer, Windows Server, and Windows kernel-mode drivers.

Thx, I applied this update to both my laptop & desktop (both Win7 - Ultimate SP1 x64) and it thankfully DIDN'T BRICK my PC lol..
BUT they don't seem to give any further details... X(

Things I am curious about include:
- Windows kernel-mode drivers
- Common Log File System Driver
- Microsoft Windows Search Component
- Volume Manager Driver

KB4034664 problem

I encountered problems with KB4034664 yesterday, wherein the desktop froze, despite several attempts. Restoring back to the point before KB4034664 did not rectify the problem but restoring to the previous day did. I subsequently installed KB4034679 instead as it contains only the security elements of KB4034664. My desktop is booting normally now.

I've had no problems with KB4034664 so far.
I always make a system image before installing important or recommended updates. If problems arise then I go back in time with a system image restore. I generally don't bother with optionals.

I regularly do system image backups, but a recent shadow copy would work, as well. Correct?

I only use Shadow Copies for restoring individual files and folders that I've deleted/modified and want to restore. I haven't had great experiences with System Restore as a couple of occasions it hasn't fixed the issue I've had.
I always restore from System Images as I know it's going to do a better job of restoring from any issues I've had.

Though I know a lot of users use System Restore a lot and have had no problems with it.

System Restore was iffy for me with XP and simply did not work for me on three different Win 7 machines. I've never had an image made and verified by Macrium Reflect fail to restore.

I always found System Restore to be a complete waste of time on XP. I used it once and it completely mucked up my system. It seemed to cause more problems than it was worth (for me anyway), so I always turned it off. I just made sure I backed up every week.

I have all my Windows 7 drives (except SSD's) to "Restore Previous Versions of Files" only, as I do tend to use Shadow Copies often. Data is on separate partitions from my OS, so my System images don't take long. I use a different backup software for my Data drives.

Can't go wrong with the the free version of Macrium - I've never had an image restore fail either.
I even ditched the paid Pro version 5 when they introduced Differential backups in the free version of 6 - as I didn't need to keep paying for it just to get differential backups.

Back in 2007 or 2008 when my Win7 Ultimate machine was a Vista Ultimate machine, I had a one off emergency, that required my immediate attention.

A System Restore using the latest System Image Backup on a hard drive, sorted the problem straight away.

Since then, I've been quite pedantic of regular system image backups.

Agreed, System Image Restoration works really well. I've even used the built in Windows 7 System Image utility and it's worked fine. Although, I know it can be a little temperamental, especially when it comes to resized partitions - it doesn't handle that well at all, and can just delete another partition if not careful.
With Macrium you have more control over resized partitions.

But the regular Windows System Restore I never recommend, but that's only from my own experience.
It can be handy for certain things - rolling back drivers for example. But, I wouldn't recommend it for a full restore.
