Today Windows Updated and prompted to install "Important" 4 updates.
The system rebooted to a Windows repair screen which tried but failed to complete a repair. This was a bummer as I use my IGP connected screen as my main screen (w/ taskbar) and the GFX card connected screen as my '"work screen" so that when I boot the wavy windows logo appears on my left screen, but log in screen is on right. The repair windows was on left screen which KB and mouse won't act upon till windows loads. Usually I switch to another user account which has them reversed for Updates, but I got lazy this time.
It would seem that a system restore was done as I was able to shut down and reboot and all was normal. Looking at Update history, it said that two updates failed:
KB4512506 - Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Wireless Networking, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows Virtualization, Windows Datacenter Networking, Microsoft Scripting Engine, the Microsoft JET Database Engine, Windows Input and Composition, Windows MSXML, Internet Explorer, and Windows Server.
KB4474419 - SHA-2 code signing support update for Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008
Again, these were listed as failed in the update history but disappeared once the WU "new updates are available" window popped up.
One update seems to have been lost in the twilight zone as it shows neither in updates to be done of installed. I'm assuming that the malicious software removal tool was the 4th.
Anyone hear of problems associated with these updates ?
I did note that two problems are associated with KB4512506
1. "This issue has been resolved in the latest version of KB4474419 (released on or after August 13, 2019). Please verify that it is installed and restart your machine before installing this update." As both are included in the same Patch Tuesday listing, mighta been a good idsea to have 2506in a later update than 4419.
2. "Microsoft has temporarily placed a safeguard hold on devices with an affected version of Symantec Antivirus or Norton Antivirus installed to prevent them from receiving this type of Windows update until a solution is available. We recommend that you do not manually install affected updates until a solution is available." Perhaps this applies to Kaspersky also ?
In wuda assumed that with both being in the same patch Tuesday, WU would know to do 4419 before 2506 ... but that may be too much to expect from MS. I am assuming that the best approach would be to install 4419 reboot and then try 2506 ... tho maybe a wait a week to see what issues others have experienced.
