I'v been recently having some wierd problems with my win7.
My desktop auto arranges icons even tho the auto arrange is not checked. i can drag them away to new grid positions but on manuall refresh or like reboot it auto arranges them back to left side of the desktop. apparently it arranges in the last used "sort by" from right click. anyone know how to fix?
Also i think this came at the same time:
When i change the view mode in "my computer" it doesnt remember it, iv always used details before and now everytime i enter it, it has changed to icons.
If that does'nt help you its must certainly some other folder around there.. using a fresh windows account you can easily test it folder by folder by exporting them from the corrupt account and runing it on the non-corrupt profile and log out / log in until you see when the working account gets the same problem as your corrupt one.. then you know what folder it is.
For those looking for the answer i still havent found a solution... i narrowed it down to it has something to do with a corrupt user profile ... if i create a new user in windows the new user don't have this problem.. however its not a FIX since i copying all my information to a new user is not possible.. the guides online only work partly and don't mention loss in some profile settings.
I find it pretty sad that officiall windows support answers are to make a new profile .. its the typical microsoft way ... find a way around problems .. not solving them.. my suggestions.. go mac or linux.
Second one has nothing to do with this problem ... this is a glitch ... not something microsoft intended ... As i'm saying ... desktop icons are AUTO arranged on refresh / reboot ... even tho the thing is not checked....
Yep, it is a nasty glitch. The second one was intended for in Windows Explorer, but to hopefully see if it may also reset and toggle the desktop auto arrange back to off and working properly again as well.
As far as I know and seen as well, creating and using a new user account seems to be the only viable option available currently.
You might also give the tutorial a try below to set a default folder view for all folders to see if it may reset and toggle it all to work properly again.
Creating a new profile would be my LAST possilbe option.. would rather format windows and get that done at the same time since configure the profile / settings / programs it was takes the most time ..... I'v tryied the guides on fixing a corrupt user profile by copying the information but some WIERD way i have no premissions to copy most of the files .... and im administrator... windows is just shit.
If you like, go ahead and give each tutorial (disable auto arrange/set default folder view) above a try to see if they may be able to help. Only do one and test for a while before doing the other since each one would cancel the other out.
You got nothing to lose by trying them.

I solved the problem........ FINALLY ... HOPEFULLY this is the exact same cause for everyone else out there... i'v seen hundreds of threads about it .. but i FOUND the SOLUTION ... After doing some MAJOOOOR registry digging using a non-corrupt account and my corrupt one i manage to step by step narrow the exact registry folder / key that was causing this error! removed the folder and VOILA ... everything works like before!
The registry folder i removed was: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\clsid\{42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1}]
It contained this: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\clsid\{42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1}] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\clsid\{42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1}\InprocServer32] "ThreadingModel"="Both" @="%SystemRoot%\\system32\\shell32.dll"

I created an account on the forums just to say thank you, and also offer a potential warning.
I've been going nuts trying to sort out my grandmothers laptop which started doing the auto-arrange thing about a month ago. The Reg key you mention fixed the problem once it was removed.
*However*, I did a bit more searching for that clsid and it seems to show up a lot in reference to a rootkit Trojan that may have infected the computer. I know there was a Trojan on this laptop, and it has been very hard to get rid of, and now I suspect it may be related to this registry key also.
