Auto Arrange?

this is so frigging annoying that i'm going back to XP or maybe check out Linux, not much else i can say that hasn't already been said:mad::zip::mad:

me wonders if Microsoft will ever release software that hasn't been rushed through development and wont require updates and patches to fix problems which should never have gone unsorted :doh::sarc:

*goes to check out Linux*

Im waiting for the solution too. I might revert back to XP if I cant find the solution for this. 'way around it' takes times and I don't want to go trough all the hassle to do my works just to have 'latest windows' on my PC.

anyway, win 7 is very good in other aspects. just when you get annoyed, you tends to forget 'other' good aspects of it.

I have used windows products forever. I have never had a problem untill this. Its not like a patch from microsoft can't fix this... And why they haven't fixed it yet I don't know. But it was a HUGE mistake and it really pisses me off and it is starting to affect my productivity with Windows 7. If this is not fixed soon, I am moving away from microsoft for good.

Hello CrimsonEagle,

If you are referring to how the icons in a folder window in XP could be arranged by moving them around however you like, then this feature has been removed in Vista and Windows 7 and does not seem likely to return. :(

These tutorials below may be helpful. See the related links in them as well.

This Needs To Be Fixed Now!

The fact that one cannot disable Auto Arrange in Windows 7 and arrange icons within folders anyway you want is frustrating and counter-productive. (This can be done on the desktop, but not within folders.) Microsoft needs to fix this flaw in Windows 7 quickly.

Some previous posters have been confused. In prior versions of Windows, including Vista, the user has been able to disable the Auto Arrange feature within folders by unselecting it from the View menu. I think for some users of the previous versions of Windows they have never had a need to disable it and are unaware that they could do so.

Windows 7 has been designed by amateurs

Windows media player is terrible also. There is no now playing icon anymore or it is not labled. I can't make new play lists from within the playlist pane. Windows 7 has been designed by amateurs.

"The auto-arrange (or not) option IS available on Vista (under the folder view tab) as was on a all previous Windows versions I've worked with. On Windows 7 it is a forced auto-arrange whether you like it or not."

yes I know

Thankyou. Yes I know where it is located, but my old geezer parents can't figure it out, purely because it is not labeled. They did not simplify windows media player they just made the icons smaller, hidden, and unnoticeable. It is confusing at first. The super bar for example is not much different from quick launch, but now they've just combined the windows taskbar grouping option with quick launch to make everything look neat. It does not help the people who stay with xp, because they all want something new, BUT THEY ALL WANT THE SAME OLD XP STYLE. Windows 7 should be xp with more networking options and more 64 bit compatibility.
If a users comments really matter, they must fix the mistake that is windows 7:(

I will switch to Macintosh if Microsoft does not change their auto arrange icons to a manual arrange option.
BOYCOTT:mad2: XP, 98, and 2000 are now my favorites
Even VISTA WAS BETTER
The Administrators such as Brink do not know that the option to manually select and arrange or move icons was available in Vista. This makes me question if they really even used vista at all. I fricken own all Windows operating systems. The option has not been removed from VISTA, your an administrator check your facts. UNLESS THERE HAS BEEN AN UPDATE TO REMOVE THIS OPTION. WHY!! i ALSO HATE AUTO ALIGN TO GRID FOR RECORD.:mad2::mad2:Right click VIEW TAB WITHIN ANY FOLDER YOU GO IN AND DAAAAA DARE IT WILL BE. I am so pissed off right now.:roflmao:

Wait, most people don't even know there is a 64-bit XP.
To enable quick-launch on 7, read this tutorial.
Yes, I actually do prefer WMP11 to 12. But I will get used to it.
Overall, I strongly believe Windows 7 is the best OS Microsoft ever released. Once people get used to it, it is much nicer than XP.
Just my opinion, I don't want to start a fight.

i'd like to say that i'm also against auto arrange. I'm a DJ and i like to have my folders scattered all around everywhere in a very specific file and access them this way, something i could too on Windows XP. Right now on Windows 7 i can't do that, which is very important for me and time saving.

It hasn't been more than 6 hours that i installed Win7 and i'm already reconsidering reinstalling XP. i want to move freely around my folders and look here and there (some kind of freedom the admins and moderators here don't seem to understand). not everybody likes stuff to be in order and want to do it their own way. that means that i want to move this friggin folder wherever i want and not by date, size etc.

Hello, Welcome to the Forums!
Windows 7 is a good OS, and it is going to be around for a while. Support for XP will dwindle, while little fixes like auto-arrange will come out, as time goes on. It is hardly advisable to ditch the new OS for one 9 years old, just for the sake of a few small irks.
That said, you are free to do what you want. If you need any help with 7, we will be happy to assist you.

well if there is not a chance but a reassurance that this "little" fix as auto arrange will be fixed within the upcoming weeks or in the nearest future possible i can bear with that but only for a little while. it's so frustrating when some abilities are given for so long and then the less thinkable yet most annoying thing gets removed off your privileges.

it's just that i like doing/moving/arranging/handling files and folders my way as i did for the past 9 years and not the way Microsoft wants.

Understood. I am just saying that I do not recommend throwing away the new OS in favor of one 9 years old.
