Autoplay on my desktop has stopped working. I have to go to Windows Explorere and open the DVD drive to access the proper exe file. It does not work for software or for music or for my rescue disk or the original Win7 OS software. I had the autoplay set up for "ask me every time" and I changed it to "play using Windows Media Player" for CDs and that still didn't work. Any suggestions?

I went to where you suggestedbut there is no "explorer" as a sub folder under "policies", only an entry labeled REG_SZ. What should I do?

Right click on Policies folder choose New > Key . Name it Explorer

:ADDED:

Check this registry hive as well

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Delete NoDriveTypeAutoRun if present as well

I went to the local machine and "explorer" did exist under "policies". There are 4 keys but none of them ar "nodrivetypeautorun". I also added the "explorer" under "policies" in the current user listing but it still has no key or entry. What's next to do?

It is risky to have consumers edit their registry when these controls are avaiable in the Control Panel under Default Programs>AutoPlay settings.

That is the problem. As I mentioned before, the autoplay settings are already set in control panel and it still doesn't work. This is also a change in that it hs always worked but all of a sudden decided to stop working.

In that case did you try to System Restore to before this began?

I did look at the link and downloaded the app that added the folder and key to the registry. It didn't fix the problem. I noticed and additional problem associated with the download. I don't get any longer a download window that shows the download progress and allows me to click on it when finished to start the installation. I have to go to downloads and search for the download to start it.

I'm using Firefox 20. I checked the ad-ons and extensions and there is no download manager. I suppose that I have to add it to my add-ons. I tried using IE to see if it worked whne I downloaded an app but it won't work and I have to use Task Manager to close it. Oh Boy, another problem. I also have not resolved the autorun/autoplay problem. It still exists and I even tried using system restore which goes thru the process and ends up telling me that it could not finish and suggested that I close my anti-virus program. I did and I still could get it to complete. Any suggestions?

try this

:ar: Start Firefox Browser.

:ar: In the address bar, type about:config

:ar: Click on the button – I’ll be careful, I promise! A page will open with tons of stuff

:ar: Type this in search box – browser.download.UseToolkitUI

:ar: Select it and double click on it to set its value to True.

:ar: Done. Close the tab now.

:ar: Check whether you’ve reverted back to the old download manager experience by hitting on download button located before home button.

:ar: You old download manager window should pop up on the screen.

Thanks to everyone that helped. I finally gave up and took the desktop into Staples and had their techs look at it. They got the system working and autoplay/autorun now works. Incidentally, the problem with Firefox 20 not showing the download window is also resolved. In version 20, Firefox has a downward pointing arrow in the upper right coner. When a download is in progress, the arrow color turns to green and if you cklick on it, it displays the download window.

You could get the previous download manager back on Firefox 20

Open a new tab inside Firefox

:ar: Type about:config, then press Enter.

:ar: Paste the following into the search field: browser.download.useToolkitUI

:ar: Under the Value field, right-click false and then click Toggle. That should set the Value to true.

:ar: Restart Firefox.
