I have just downloaded and executed autoruns to diagnose bootup issues. The problem is that when I browse to the logon tab, all processes are ticked even though many of them aren't automatically loaded as startup (and unticked in msconfig for that matter). Am I missing something over here or is it autoruns not working well ? Thanks

dear gidra,
If you are trying to estimate boot timings in windows 7, In addition to Boot racer, www.bootracer.com there exists a method using windows logs, which are precision perfect!
Kindly follow the steps in the below mentioned article and you get a very precise boot-up time( start to logon screen)

Since my scores are bad to pretty bad, i will harbor the secret in my heart to the incinerator!;)

How many Auto-run programs are you allowing? This is one sit. where "more is not merry"!

When i was doing my medical studies, i had a searing experience, which i remember 20 years after the event occured! These auto-run programs are devils in disguise with CDs,DVDs and USB drives. I insered a CD-ROM containing (supposedly) the entire contents of Harrison's Principles Of Medicine and in a flash ,the pc was rendered useless!

Now ,my Avira Antivir Premium does not allow any Pen drives or Flash drives which have auto-run programs in them! Just blocks these newly bought ones! I have to manually delete the auto-run ability of these drives!
Duh! A long post! Thanks for reading!

Regards,
Sreedhav

Hey sreedhav, thanks for your input. When I mentioned autoruns I was actually referring to this application Autoruns for Windows rather than the autorun function which comes along with many CDs/DVDs/Pen drives. I'll look into the bootracer app as well, which I doubt it would come up with more graphical statistics than xbootmgr/xperf/xperfviewer which I'm currently using right now.

hi there :)
i use autoruns and yes you are right ticked items generally mean they will auto run on start up important files in the registry will also be ticked unless experienced in this area you are best not to alter these. in scheduled tasks this is important due to system start up programs inside windows operating system as well as what you may have personally to start up. in services these are very important (you can change properties here like automatic, manual, disable. in windows services. in windows type services in start menu search box and click on result in results pane with the gear wheel icon. system programs in here will rely on these services please be warned.) in autoruns help files it explains in-depth what the functions are.

Autoruns for Windows v10.06
This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.

Autoruns' Hide Signed Microsoft Entries option helps you to zoom in on third-party auto-starting images that have been added to your system and it has support for looking at the auto-starting images configured for other accounts configured on a system. Also included in the download package is a command-line equivalent that can output in CSV format, Autorunsc.

Simply run Autoruns and it shows you the currently configured auto-start applications as well as the full list of Registry and file system locations available for auto-start configuration. Autostart locations displayed by Autoruns include logon entries, Explorer add-ons, Internet Explorer add-ons including Browser Helper Objects (BHOs), Appinit DLLs, image hijacks, boot execute images, Winlogon notification DLLs, Windows Services and Winsock Layered Service Providers. Switch tabs to view autostarts from different categories
