So I recently installed Avast antivirus and it works really well except it slows down my internet and makes my ping higher. Is there any solution to this?

You can try remove the Avast Internet plug in.

Open Internet Explorer, Click on the "Settings Cog" (top right)
Then click on "Manage Add-ons"

New Window Should open, Under Toolbars and extensions, Look for Avast, highlight it, Then click disable,
If there is not a Avast Add-in, Then perhaps disable the Proctection, Just to test if it is Avast causing pages to load slower.

I use Chrome and denied the installing of the extension. It's not just my browser, my internet is slow in general.

disable the protection temporary whilst you test to see if AVAST is the root cause of this.

It won't disable.

AVAST Shield control >> Disable for 10 minutes >> Component Stop >> Yes / No.

Doesn't disable. Tried several times. I'm about to uninstall my $50 AVAST! Pro version. The page-loading has become intolerably slow.

thru add/remove programs, begin the removal of Avast. It will give you the option to repair the install, allow the repair. Note, this will default all your chosen settings to default. See if that fixes it. If it does, then go ahead and personalize your settings again.

In the past few years, I've used Avast AV Pro [or is it Premium?].
Let's try this: Pretend you're uninstalling Avast. Once in the first Avast screen, choose Modify. Inside of the Modify screen you will see many choices! Un-checkmark everything except the real time protectiion shields. Restart for sure. You may have to Restart a couple of times for the "dust to settle." Report back. If everything seems faster, leaner, better, then maybe Modify again and add Rescue cd/dvd. Give me the Modify list, thanks! :) It's been awhile since I've used Avast AV P[whatever the name is].

The Repair will also keep what might be the un-needed/un-wanted modules and services that's slowing down the thread starter's internet operations. Hence, I recommend first the Modify option.

Guys, gals, I just now noticed this thread started 2013! However, the problems contained in the thread opening are still going on within current Avast AV free and pay-for versions! So, let's simply keep this thread for the benefit of NEW Avast users.
