Solved AVG 64-Bit Install Goes To (x86) Folder. Why ?

I've downloaded AVG Free Edition 2012.0.1913 (64-bit).

I start the installation,
accept T&Cs,
Select "Custom Install" (next)
On "Custom Options" page, the install directory offered is C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG2012\

The installation directory offered implies a 32-bit installation.

As I am using 64-bit Windows 7 and a 64-bit AVG installer, I would expect the installation folder to be C:\Program Files\...

Is there are problem here or does the 64-bit version of AVG Free install as if it was a 32-bit application?

Any help is appreciated...

That means the actual executable files are 32-bit files. Just because a program is listed as being the 64-bit version, it doesn't necessarily mean the executables are 64-bit. By calling it AVG x64, it means it is compatible with an x64 OS.

ok... so I've AVG 32 bit version also.. then why they r referring 32bit and 64bit, if both does the same ? :sarc:

No, you have the x64 version. When a piece of software is labelled as x86 or x64, it is referring to what OS it is intended (and which one it supports). The actual .exe file(s) may still be in x86 code, which is why they would be installed in the Program Files (x86) directory. Just because an app is listed as being the x64 version...it doesn't mean that the actual files are pure, native 64-bit code, compliled to be a native 64-bit application.

In short, there's nothing wrong, what you are seeing is perfectly normal.

one more doubt... I've a 32bit AVG also... can I install that also ? as it is installed well in my 64bit... quite odd.. Then why AVG has two different versions ?

It is likely that the low level driver portions are x86 and x64 to match the OS. But the UI stuff. the things you actually "see" in the file system are 32 bit for both versions because it doesn't make any difference at all for a little UI at the user level... Compiling two versions of the UI code would require twice the testing and additional code time for no practical reason.

You don't need to install both. As I mentioned above, the label x86 or x64 refers to which OS it supports....not how the actual .exe is complied. All you have to worry about is installing the one that corresponds to your OS platform. The label is often just to let you know which OS platform it is compatible with.
