I use AVG for my anti-virus program and tried their PC Tune Up 2011. The first thing I noticed was all Office 2011 programs opened very slowly except for Outlook. It didn't open at all and I got a message saying it wasn't my default mail program. I checked and made it the default. It still wouldn't open. I got another message saying it was my MobilMe program so I disabled it. Outlook worked after that but I couldn't open .docx files that were attached to e-mail. I did a system restore back to Friday and all was well with Office 2011 again.

Just a "heads up."

I wouldn't immediately use strong registry cleaners like AVG PC Tuneup. I tried it as well and so far I think it has slowed down my PC for a little bit so I did a few restorations with my backups. MS Office just installs a lot into the registry and its not surprising if registry cleaners would identify some of those as errors. Good job for having a restore point then.

Vertex,

I learned long ago that restore point and back-up are my friends!

However, if you ask the guys that help with BSOD's, AVG is a stinker compared to other AV software.

Odd, in six plus years of using AVG, I've experienced only one BSOD and that was the AVG error on an update which I posted about earlier this year.

AVG is rock solid, in my experience.

Mike,
That's great that you aren't having any problems. Which goes to show you(us) that if you practice Safe Surfing and don't open mail from strangers you will be fine.

Go Packer's!!!!

Indeed, The Howling Wolves, you are correct. One must always be careful to stay safe. Once one dismisses the UAC without being fully aware of the reason for the warning, often, all bets are off; not always, but ...

Also, The Howling Wolves, thanks ... GO PACK! :D

After a recent (albeit very short) trial of AVG's Pc Tune Up I spent the better part of 2 days unstuffing my registry. It didnt recognize I had 2 versions of firefox, refused to let me make anything but IE my default browser, killed my ability to dim my screen.

Needless to say their un-installer works better than their tuneup.

Hi, zigzag! :)

I will admit their "PC Tuneup" needs a bit of work. I ran it once and didn't like the results. I was given the option to proceed and I declined. But, then, I know what to look for.

I'll give it another shot at a later date. In the meantime, I'll stick with CCleaner. AVG's AV, IMO, is nonpareil.

Why do people want commercial software? All one needs to "tune-up" a PC is to clean out temp files (with disk cleanup or CCleaner or a batch file), run the AV and run defrag. Done.

Well said Bill. ;)

IMHO - With any registry cleaner/ PC Tune Up / PC Analyzer, call it what you will, the potential is ever present to cause more problems than they claim to fix.

If you do not have knowledge of the registry, then you would probably be better off leaving it alone, and definitely not placing blind trust in a program to do the job for you.

There is nothing wrong with their Antivirus, and to be frank I knew what the risks were and took them anyway to find out if, and how much it would stuff my system. I had backups at the ready and win 7 dvd so wasnt concerned at all. I was only surprised at the randomness of it.

JMH brought up a valid point in is their tune up the same one that comes bundled with their paid software or are they 2 different ones.

Sorry, zigzag, I didn't mean to imply you didn't know what to look for. My apologies. I have much respect for you and, again, I apologize.
With a recent backup, I would have let it do its thing, too. I need a new (or additional) HD as I don't have space for a system image at the moment so I have to be extra careful.

The PC Tuneup from AVG is an extra program but a paid AV customer can run it at various intervals, I believe. As I mentioned, I ran it once and, as I recall, I was asked if I desired to purchase it afterward for continued unobstructed use.

Actually, I might not have the opportunity to use it again:
