AVI file help

Here is my dilemma. I generally always torrent documentaries and such and burn to DVD-RW to watch on my television. Seems simple enough right. Now I burn these files as data files with generally no issue. However the problem that ive been having lately is that once I have burned the file I will get no audio on the burned file, but will have audio on the file via my HD.

Im currently using Nero 10 smart start to burn the data files. So at this point im not sure what to do. I guess it probly seems simple to some, However im lost. I have tried other burning programs but to no avail, same issues. Thank you for any future help.

Sounds like the Audio Codex are different to what can be decoded by the Media player, Try re-encoding them with a free Encoder, there are many out there.

Or convert to DVD or Nero Digital format to see if it helps.

Ive tried converting to DVD but i dont have the Nero Suite 10. Only the smart start due to the encrytion codes getting locked out... yep im cheap.

you can try a program called auto gordian knot ("Auto GK"), i would only use it on the ones that you have a problem with since its a little bit of work converting, or atleast time consuming. Its the main program i used when i converted from avi to dvd.

it sounds like a codec problem to me too.

and check to see if the files that are having problems have different audio codecs that the ones that you had success with. If so, then share that info with us.

I will second the recommendation for AutoGK.

I'm a complete novice, but I used it successfully a few days ago.

I will try that thank you, but again the files are fine on my computer its just a matter of getting them to play audio on the disc burnt as data files. I dont burn in any other format

ok, well autogk will make you DVD compatible files, and you should be able to burn as a data disc as long as you have the VIDEO_TS folder, with the .vobs in it on the root of your DVD Disc.

What file types are you downloading? Do you prefer mp4's at faster download times lower video quality, or higher quality which is already in DVD format?

If you have you have some special dvd player that plays avi and your burning as such, then your going to probably always be susceptible to this problem, and you will need to use gspot(virtualDub does this also) to figure out what codec is causing the problem and just avoid files with that codec in it, or re-encode the audio portion of all the .avi files that contain it to one that you know works, such as lame mp3, or AC3 or something. I would use virtualDub in this case, you put in an .avi, and it outputs an .avi. you just set it to not touch the video, and select an audio codec that works with your setup.

Otherwise, i would just convert the problem childs to dvd and not worry about it, since when you transcode the file into dvd whatever program you use it is likely to give you a dvd compatible audio format.

If your downloading dvd iso's then you should just be able to burn them straight away, if they have problems its probably the source material thats no good.

If your downloading files that already in dvd structure such as a VIDEO_TS folder with some .vobs in it, and you burn those as data files, being careful to select the proper dvd format settings which i cant recall off hand, then if it doesnt work that way your either selecting the wrong settings in your burning app, or the source is fouled up to begin with.
