Avira Sufficient?

I was running Avast Free as antivirus until I discovered that it was conflicting with CDBurnerXP. I installed Avira Free in its place, but on installation Avira insisted I turn off Windows Defender.

On the face of it, it would appear that I do not now have a firewall installed (other than the one in the router).

Will Avira alone suffice?

Avira is a good AV program. Turning off Defender is normal, MSE does that too.

yes but might i suggest Microsoft sercurity essentials is lighter and wont conflict with programs and just use windows firewall+ add malwarebytes antimalware and a secondary or on demand scanner.

MBAM: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes

Both are free and this is all you will ever need to stay protected.

hope this helps,Andrew

I'm afraid Avira insisted I deactivate Security Essentials on the Windows 7 machine !

All that is needed is Micrososft Security Essentials, malwarebytes and the windows firewall. Any more will not give you significanly more protection, but may slow the computer, cause BSOD and other problems.

Of course. You cannot run Avira and MSE together. Only Avast and MSE work together.

Hi, Cheemag.

I hope I am not misunderstanding what you wrote but I got the impression you might be thinking that Windows Defender is the Windows Firewall. Windows Defender is an anti-spyware program.

If you haven't activated the Windows Firewall, I strongly advise you do that to accompany the firewall on the router.

Looking into it. Presumably that applies to the Windows 7 desktop as well as Virtual XP?

What kind of problem were you having. I run Avast Free and CDBurnerXP on my Win 7 64bit system with no problems.

Well anyway, I've done that in Virtual XP, Windows-7 and the other machine which runs ordinary XP SP2.

All appears well, many thanks

Hi, Cheemag.

As to "the other machine" you need to update it to XP SP3 as SP2 is out of support and not receiving updates. For example, the recent out-of-band update did not include an update for Windows XP, SP2. (See MS10-046 Released Out-of-Band Today)

I know, I know, but I have a very expensive application which I suspect will not run in SP-3, nor will it run in Windows-7 ... I suppose I could alway set the system back to SP2 from an Acronis image if that expensive programme really failed to run under SP3, although it would probably set me back several days at least.

Hi, Cheemag.

Have you tried the "expensive program" on the Virtual XP install?

The 5000 Euro programme, yes it works well in both Virtual and real XPs.
