Hi.

Some time ago I came here to ask about drivers so that I could get online with my Acer Aspire One D257. Your instructions got me online. {https://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/414719-drivers-needed-acer-aspire-one-aod257.html} I must again ask for your direction.

My notebook somehow dumped its drivers when I booted it after the weekend. I followed previous instructions and downloaded and installed all the drivers again. However, I still cannot get connected. I get a box asking me for the password, but when I enter it (and I use it for other devices), I am told that I cannot connect. When I do the diagnostics, I am told:

'If you're connected to a hotspot or domain network, contact the netowork administrator.
Otherwise:
1. Unplug or turn off the device.
2. After all the lights on the device are off, wait at least 10 seconds.
3. Turn the device back on or plug it back into the power outlet.'

etc.

The laptop was connecting fine until I booted it up.

When I check device manager, and show hidden devices, I do not see the Atheros driver in the list despite having installed it.

I see:
Intel Centrino(R) Wireless-N 100 (I assume this is for a home router)
Microsoft ISATAP Adapters through #7
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter and adapter #2
Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
Tap-Nord VPN Windows Adapter V9
Tap-Windows Adapter V9
WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (IKEv2)
WAN Miniport (IPv6)
WAN Miniport (L2TP)
Wan Miniport (network Monitor)
WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
WAN Miniport (PPTP)
WAN Miniport (SSTP)

As you can see, I installed every driver from the list I was given in {https://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/414719-drivers-needed-acer-aspire-one-aod257.html}

I installed the chipset.

I am at a loss now. I thought that by duplicating the process that you described in your original posts, I would 'fix it', but I am obviously missing something.

Can anyone help?

Perhaps a System Restore might be more appropriate in this instance. You could roll back the computer to before the weekend?

One thing I really cannot understand is why the Atheros adapter is not showing as being installed in the adapter list. I did view hidden files. I have installed it a number of times but get this message as it is doing its thing:
Device might not be present or could have been ejected/unplugged from the system. Insert or reinsert now.

I do not recall this the first time I installed the adapter.

When I do a general search, I cannot find it anywhere on the computer.

You can use DISM to list all the drivers that you currently have installed.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt Window, and at the console, type either:
DISM /Online /Get-Drivers /all | more <Enter>
or
DISM /Online /Get-Drivers /all > D:\Drivers.txt <Enter>

If you type the first one, then you will get all the drivers, one screenfull at a time. Press <space bar> when you have read up to the cursor.
If you type the second one, then you will get a list of drivers inside a file located at location D:\. (Change the path according to where you have permission to save a file)

Hi Judy,

your showing both Wifi and Ethernet drivers in your post.

Wifi - Intel 1st on list
Ethernet - Realtek 4th on list - NOT Atheros

I also see your running a proxy VPN Nord
1) Is your AV set to allow it
2) As a quick check you could uninstall it.

I do run Nord and it has been working fine. I installed the adapter with the help of their tech.

Which adapter should I delete? And what is AV please?

Hi BlueJudy,

your normal wifi password will be on your router
Control panel >> Network & sharing >>available networks(pick yours or Nords) >> connect ...it should ask for a key
it will be on your router
OR
Nord may also require a password - from the email they sent you?? (dont use it myself)

AV = AntiVirus

Hi All,
Greets,
bluejudy : Sir,
1. Update your specs with Speecy Portable : Speccy - Portable
Extract the zip file to a folder & run Speccy.exe for 32 bit OS OR Speccy64.exe for 64 bit OS
2. This is a multiboot ?

Let us know.

Thanks & Regards. ...

Well, I think I have it figured out. I think the network card is dead. I did try to get to it, but there is a stripped screw that just will not budge, so I guess I am simply not going to get online with my Acer. I have a small Toshiba laptop, but the sound is almost nonexistent. Works fine with headphones though, and I can get online.

I would like to say thanks to all of you who commented. With your help I was able to figure this out. Without it, I would have never done so.

Hi bluejudy,
Sir,
I do not agree that your card is dead. I myself faced this problem. I have a lot of things to share/advise/try.
Also you missed some very good points cited by Sirtorchwood.
1.You should try Hard Reset.
2.Your wireless card is not totally dead as it is detecting the wireless connections. A proper driver should do the thing.
3.There is a BIOS driver update for your pc to improve WLAN.
4.may be you don't have atheros wireless card at all, you may keep on installing it but it is not there & so it will never show.
Actually you have ''Intel Centrino(R) Wireless-N 100'' wireless adapter. That is not for your Home Router!
I have never seen two wireless adapters on the same pc. They will be conflicting, isn't it ?
5.Even if your card is dead, you can use an external USB wireless adapter to connect that pc to internet.
6.You also have Ethernet option to get online.
7.You should test the things out of the OS! There may be a software problem. For that our senior sir SIW2 has a win 10 recovery media that is well equipped with drivers to connect to internet.
That way even Nord VPN & AV will not come into play if it/they are the problem.
8. It is possible that just taking card out, blowing the dust & re seating the card does it all well.
9. If there are connecting problem(s), You can check that desktop & card on/in all different environment.
For eg. switch off all the Routers & Wireless devices, turn on the 'data usage' & 'hotspot' on your Mobile & try to connect to that.

Now it is left to you!

Thanks & Regards. ...

Wow! Thank you so much. I shall try all of this. I am so glad you gave me these tips. I shall go back and reread the advice from Torchwood. I think perhaps I just did not understand it.

I am also going to read the tutorials and the Super Windows Guide and will maybe figure out how to phrase questions. I think part of all this is knowing the questions I should be asking, and sometimes I do not. I appreciate the guidance and advice everyone here provides. Sometimes I wonder why people will spend so much of their unpaid time helping others. I hope that someone pays something forward to all of you for doing what you do.

Regards,
Judy who is a Ma'am rather than a Sir (grin). I am a 67-year-old librarian in a high school in a fishstix village in Nova Scotia who constantly bugs the students for computer advice LOL.

Hi bluejudy,
Greets,
Ma'am,
It's a tradition established by seniors & I hope it will continue forever!

I am ready to support interactively if you have any doubts/confusions/problems but it may take times in between. I would suggest to edit 'System Specs' for that.

Please mention installed BIOS version as well. If you run Speecy, in the 'Motherboard' section, BIOS version, date, etc. will be shown there.

Let me know.

Thanks & Regards. ...
