Hey guys,,

Im new to furoms, and i'd say windows too since the last time i used it when XP came out. I use it at college, in classes, but just for Microsoft Office ...etc.

So its just the settings, updates, installs..etc that im not that good at, but anyway i'll make it short lol.

I bought my Gaming system like last week, after using MAC OS for years. And till now i have formatted my computer and re-installed windows like 7 times no kidding. first it crashed and the hard drives needed to be formatted, then a downloaded a file and it was a virus, later on i messed up the whole programs and such but im getting used to it anyway. The thing is, is it possible to move programs form one drive to another ? since i have SSD hard drive and i don't want to fill it up with programs that i don't use very often. I have SSD 128 as primary, and 1 TB second drive for files and programs. so how would i move programs from one drive to another ? i tried that by cut and paste and it messed up my whole programs, i know im dumb but i thought by disabling the programs that i wanted to move completly i can do so. So any ideas on how to do that ?

My second question is that why i have like 2 program files in each hard drive ? i have one called "Program Files" and " Program Files 86x" ?? and the wierd thing is that i have almost same programs in both folders !! i.e i have DVX player in both folders in the same hard drive and moany others, even though i have only installed them like once. Also i have tried to put them in one files but i couldn't.

My third question is about the user files, where you have downloads, music, photos ...etc, can i move that by it self to the second drive ? i mean i would have widows on C: drive, can i make that folder in D: ? and how would change the dfult download dic to D instead of C.

last thing, which anti-virus i should get ? i use Avast atm and it seems good

Thanks for reading all that lol, and please help me out here because im re-installing again now and i don't feel like doing it ever 2 days lol. And please if you have some tips and things that i should know about, i really need them.

Thanks yall

hi FDG and welcome to sevenforums,

some short quick answers for you, maybe others can elaborate a bit more if needed...

1 - rather than copy/pasting programs from one drive to another, it's best to unisntall them first from drive A (if they are there already), then reinstall them choosing drive B as the destination during the install procedure.

2 - the reason you have two program files folders is because one of them is for old-style 32bit software (x86), and the other for new fangled 64 bit progs.

3 - you can easily move user file locations by following this tutorial.

4 - carry on using avast if it's ok for you.

feel free to ask more questions and browse through the extensive tutorials - i'm going to bed now, but others will help you.

As soon as that install finishes then create a system repair disc.

DISC - CREATE A SYSTEM REPAIR DISC
START | type System Repair | Enter key | Create Disc button

Now post a snapshot of the MAXIMIZED output of Disk Management.

This will help us to give you sound advice regarding disk usage. I realize that at this point you've installed nothing more than Win 7 but at least we will be sure of what we have to work with.

To run disk management:
WIN | type DISKMGMT.MSC |ENTER

To make a snapshot:
WIN | type SNIPPING | ENTER

To post the snapshot:

WIN is the key with the flag on it.

Also have an Asus ha1002xp netbook with Win 7 Ultimate installed.
The installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing in Device Manager can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device. I would not change out drivers given unless there are performance reasons.

Install updates and then programs slowly over time to gauge performance after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and can spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets. http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/70248-troubleshooting-msconfig.html

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Windows 7 Firewall. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

When it is finished, clean and order the HD perfectly using state-of-the-art free CCleaner then Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers monthly.

Then save a Win7 Backup image externally so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD or replacement using DVD or Repair CD. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/663-backup-complete-computer-create-image-backup.html

I would not tweak Win7 beyond normal system settings, as it will almost always work against you. Bring any issues or weaknesses here to get Win7 solutions.
