Solved background wallpaper orientation issue

Hi

I have a set of my pictures - some in landscape and some in portrait orientation - and i have set this folder for shuffled selection of pictures as background pictures for my Windows 7. What I observe is that the landscape pictures show correctly. But when it comes to the pictures I shot in portrait orientation are showing sideways! Is there anyway I can make windows recognize the correct orientation and set the wallpaper accordingly? The wallpapers are set to change every 20 minutes.

That's weird.
I've never seen that happen on my PC.

You could create edited versions of the portrait pictures, to make them appear to be landscape (i.e. pad the edges).

do the portrait pictures appear at the correct orientation when viewed in windows explorer?

if not, you'll need to open the picture in an image editor (even windows photoviewer will do), rotate it 90 degrees, and then use the newly rotated image in your wallpaper collection. you don't even need to explicitly save if you use the default windows photoviewer. (not sure about the enhanced 'live' version.)

They appear in proper orientation in the windows explorer and the windows picture viewer. They also appear normal on another PC that I have. So I can't figure out the issue.

Are the pictures from a camera?
Perhaps the orientation info (for the photos) is playing a part.

I don't have a digital camera, so I have no photos, which means I can't check their properties.

I think that this is your answer. In normal mode, i.e. holding the camera in the standard landscape orientation, the X-axis is the horizontal and the Y-axis is vertical. The meta data records it as such. However, when you turn the camera 90 degrees to take a portrait photo, the meta data records the X and Y information as they would be if the camera was still held in the landscape orientation - in other words, the X-axis and Y-axis are effectively swapped. Some cameras are capable of intelligently assigning X and Y according to the orientation, either manually or automatically. Most cameras don't have this capability, so orientation correction needs to be done afterwards by means of an editing program.

All the pictures have been edited in correct orientation in PS CS5.

Problem solved. I reloaded all images in the picture viewer and scrolled from first to the last image. And reset the personalization to the image folder. Now all images are in proper orientation. I think there might have been a few images direct from the camera which were not touched in PS CS5 and these were the ones which may have caused the problem.
