Okay.

So ever since mast night, ive. Ive been trying to back up my files to my 1tb hardrive, but at certain points it would fail and not give an error code/message. Then when I deleted the stuff that was able to be backed up on it, the capacity amount did not increase, as if I didn't delete the files at all! Help?

I'm not an expert at anything so these are just some random thoughts off the top of my head. :)

- Since you're using a netbook, are you plugged into ac or trying to backup on battery power alone?
- Have you tried a different USB port?
- With the GoFlex plugged in is it recognized in Disk Management?
- Does it have one large partition of about 931GB or does it have more than one partition?
- If more than one partition could you post screenshot of your maximized Disk Management?

Random thoughts? Dude. Its like you have one like my own! Now to answer your questions:

1. Its plugged into a USB targus laptop fan.
2. Yes. Twice.
3. Yes it is.
4. One large partition of 931.51 GB
5. No need since one partition?

Uh-oh. If we're thinking alike you better watch out for your sanity or I may corrupt it! :roflmao:

OK, couple more questions I should have asked the first time. Sorry for that.

- Are you using the native (built in) Windows 7 backup utility? If no, what are you using?
- If yes, are you trying to backup data (1) or make a system image backup (2)?

backup.JPG

- You indicated, "when I deleted the stuff that was able to be backed up on it, the capacity amount did not increase, as if I didn't delete the files at all!" Did you also do a quick format on the GoFlex before trying the next backup?
- And just for clarification, you also said your 1012 is plugged into a USB Targus laptop fan. But is it also plugged into a wall socket with the ac power adapter?

Dell 1012.JPG

Sorry for the extra questions but assuming the GoFlex isn't damaged in some way, this almost sounds like a power issue. Like the GoFlex isn't getting enough "juice" and the incoming data fades in an out so only some of it is getting saved. Then again, it might be something else entirely.

LOL okay, I got my eye on you xD.

To answer your first two questions yes I am.
I didn't do that actually as for the formatting.

As for the plugged in question yes it is. I'm keeping it charged while the fan and the back up tasks are running (meaning I'm trying to back it up now with the fan).

That's weird. I don't think its the power, because the backup hasn't failed as of yet since I posted this topic. It could just be a one time thing, or as you said, a whole new problem! :o

Afraid i cant help on the backup fail but i can tell you i have seen HDD space not increase when deleting backups, i believe the problem to be that you dont have access permissions to the subfolders within the backup so when you delete the file appears to disappear but subfolders are left behind.

Subsequently if you navigate down through the backup file, every time you double click down one sub level you are prompted for access rights if you navigate down through all the way then exit when you delete the root folder space will be reclaimed

Purchased a Seagate USB HD for backup a little over a year ago while I was running Vista. It ran okay for a little over a month and then it started to deny access to update the files. Finally it got to the point that when I ran a reboot or a cold boot I would get the Seagate screen but couldn't gain access to it or my computer. Tried to contact Seagate but my e-mails were ignored. Reinstalled my O/S and quit using it. After running Windows 7 for a while I decided to give it another try. It ran for one download cycle and after that it completely blocked access to MS Office and it weould not uninstall. The last I saw of it, it was on its way to the dump. I'll rely on backing up my data on DVD disks.
As for running windows backup, I've tried it three times and each time it comes up with a different reason why it can't install. The system never mentions this until the transfer is almost completed. (Can't read a brand new disk [more than one], disk has corrupted sectors (strange since I can still fill up the disk with other data and retrieve it), and a simple transfer failed. It has been removed from the Action Centre. I'll rely on backing up my data on DVD disks.

Hope you have better luck than I did.

Assuming you are using Windows Imaging and file/folder backup:
Both
1) Volume Shadow Copy
2) Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider
Should be set to manual as per MS advice.
and
a check for drive errors should be carried out
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html
Seagate SeaTools will allow you to also run some quick diagnostics on D:. Since it is 1TB a full scan will take some hours.
SeaTools | Seagate

Also try just making an image using "Create a System Image" button.
