Backup from a Netbook

I have a Netbook with Windows 7 Starter edition and am still trying to find an acceptable way of backing up.
Unfortunately Microsoft won't let 7 Starter edition backup up to a network location and netbooks don't have CD-drives. It really looks to me that the backup software supplied with Windows 7 is of no real use under these circumstances. Am I obliged to look for a 3rd-party solution and does anyone have any recommendations?

One way to allow the operating system to backup a netbook system is to use an external USB drive as the storage medium.

I know this will involve financial outlay to achieve, and thus is not suitable for everyone, but it does give the advantage that the drive can be used for multiple machines and kept in a location away from the PC/Laptop/netbook backed up thus providing protection against total system destruction - FIRE, THEFT Etc.

I agree on the suggestion of the external USB drive...definitely the way to go, IMO. I got a 1TB model for $99 a while back, but if you only need enough capacity to back up your netbook, you should be able to find one for less than that easily.

External drive + Acronis 2010 works great. You can backup your Netbook partitions(C:, D:, etc ) as image files, and also backup user data. The image files can be restored to different hardware if necessary, which is a selling point of Acronis.
