Backup Laptop including OS

I want to backup my laptop in such a way that even if I install a new OS I can still get everything back including the OLD OS itself.

Create a system image to an external HD. Creating a system image is a built in function for Win 7. Then you can use the system image to restore your computer to that exact state.

There are other programs that will create system images as well:

Just be sure that the HDD that you back up to has the same capacity or larger than the drive you are copying. I.E. your daily use HD is 500Gb your back up HD must be greater than or equal to 500Gb.
