My rig is modern with an i5 processor and 4Gb RAM so no slouch.

However, when the Win7 built in backup routine kicks in I have to walk away from it for about 2 hours whilst it does it's thing.

Totally unresponsive during this action.

I do have quite a few folders set to backup, plus the C:\ image and I'm backing up to a USB2 HDD.

Am I alone ?

No. This is one major reason most IT experts schedule backups in the middle of the night. And certainly, you should not be using the computer while it is backing up anyway as there will likely be some files that are changed, added, or deleted.

And for the record, 2 hours is not bad for a full backup. You don't say how big your drive is (drives are) but that sure is a factor too, as well as the amount of data you are backing up.

I will just say this - way to go for backing up!!! :)
