Backup Problem - Not enough disc space?!!

I have tried to "Create a System Image" of my C drive & back it up on a separate internal 2 Terabyte logical drive. The 2TB drive has 2 partitions - both logical. The partition I want to use has 1.7 Terabytes of free space. The size of the used space on the C drive that I want to backup is 77 GB.

Everytime I try to initiate the backup, it fails. The error states that there is not enough disc space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. Does this mean I need more space on the C drive as well? There are 388 GB of free space on the C drive. I have TONS of free space on my 2TB backup drive.

How do I get around this?

I had such problem few days ago when using the Win7 back up system. I solve it by using the small freeware program FBackup 4.

Free backup software - Backup files with FBackup

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your replies. I already have Acronis True Image Home 2011, but lately there have been some issues with their latest release. I would really like to find a way to get Windows backup to work & not have to use a 3rd party backup software.

There must be a reason & solution as to why Windows backup is behaving this way.

I've researched this a lot & still haven't found a concrete answer.

I know someone in this forum must have an answer.

I got something similar once and it had to do with fact that the "system reserved' 100MB partition had less than 50MB available. Windows "system image" complained about that.

Windows "system image" is very limited, and you cannot easily move the backups around. While I understand the desire to not use 3rd party products, this is an area where you probably want to.

I presently have the same issue. I have made successfully many Images with the Win 7 built in and I have even restored. All of a sudden, I'm getting what you describe. I do not have a System Reserved partition so maybe that's not the issue.

The system reserved partition needs shadow storage space but you should also check the VSS space on the storage volume.
From an elevated command prompt
>vssadmin list shadowstorage

will show you the available shadow storage space on your backup volume.
