Hello everyone, I have decided to get rid of this relic of a computer and upgrade to a newer one. The new computer will come with the operating system all ready installed, so is there anyway i can just back up my software on this computer to an external drive and just re-install on the new computer ????

I hope there is, because i have so many programs loaded on this machine over the many years I've had it....

Thanks again everyone for the feedback in advance...........Jim :):):):)

Installed programs cannot be moved. Installation .exes can be moved but it is probably not wise because you most likely have old versions.

For the new machine, all you really can/should move is your user data.

If you clone the entire HD, or the OS/program partition, you might be able to pull this off. However, if the chipsets, hardware, devices, drivers, yada yada differ much between old and new computer - EmperorWindows is going to be less forgiving than DarthPrograms.

Actually, most programs couldn't care less that you cloned them from computer to computer.
Only programs calling on certain graphic or audio whatchamacallits have to be reEducated.
My biggest concern is Windows, however, others here probably can tell you how to smooth that one out.
