Bad HD from W10 machine

I have a platter HD from a friend whose PC stopped working.
Using a sabrent power / sata to usb rig to plug it into my pc.


1. it shows up in explorer after 5 minutes w/a drive letter but no access
2. shows up in device manager with the HD name (toshiba 1tb model #)
3. shows up in disk manager ONLY if I load DM 1st and then turn on the HD. Only option is to format or convert to DD, which does not work. Operation not allowed.
4. Uhh....this did come from a w10 machine.


Thoughts? How can I save this data?

If it came from a Win 10 machine (with UEFI BIOS) it may be formatted "GPT" and unless you have UEFI BIOS it may not be recognized.

You could try retrieving the data using a Linux Live Bootable CD!

That is my plan if all else falls but I am not a tech and am not quite set up to do that though I have done it before. I was hoping for 'plug it in and it works'

If your using windows you wont have permission to access it as it will be owned by the win10 user you will have to take ownership in order to get files

Although you can only boot an UEFI-GPT disk on a computer with UEFI BIOS AND Win 7 64, any GPT disk can be used as a data disk under Win 7 32 or 64 bits.

Everything the OP described points to a damaged disk.
Use Crystal disk to see the SMART of the disk Downloading File /70096/CrystalDiskInfo7_8_3.exe - CrystalDiskInfo - OSDN
Don't need to be installed

- As Paul has suggested, use a Linux to transfer the data to another disk.
Or
- If you can see c:\users, as Samuria suggested, take ownership and transfer the data to another disk.
