Bad Install?

I installed Win7 onto a fresh, active partition. It went thru all the normal things, and booted (dual with XP).

But, I can't open IE8, WMP, WMC or even UAC control. For a while I could open them if I clicked 'Run as Adminstrator', but I'm the only account on the PC. And now even that doesn't work.

Can I just re-format the partition and try again?




I hate asking this question, cuz i'm supposed to be smart, but how long to do keep the dvd in the drive after installing? Does it load stuff even after it's 'installed'?

Sounds like you may have done an upgrade. If so start over with clean install. It can be done even with an upgrade key. In any event, I would start over sounds like a bad install, formatting is a good idea. Dont give key number until installed and you are satisfied.

OK... I booted from the disk, chose 'custom'. Selected the proper drive. Clicked "format". then clicked 'install'.

Win7 installed. everything seemed ok. I opened IE. installed my sound card drivers. installed the invidia drivers.

and now... I cant open IE. or WMP, or change user account settings. it wont even open.

I booted into safe mode and turned off user account settings(moved the slider to the bottom), and rebooted.

still cant open IE, or WMP or even open user account settings.

this is the 4th time i've installed it.

Do you have a restore point to go back to?

Are you getting the screen option to choose Windows 7 or XP?

Are you using a retilal disc or an ISO you burned? If you burned it burning it at the lowest possible speed has helped with install problems in the past.Fabe

ALrightie then...

After an hour on the telephone with MS Support, and another re-install. The problem has been solved (I hope).

She had me manually activate the partition from a command prompt from the disk before installing.

All seems well (so far).

Originally, I had re-formatted the drive from XP, and maked it as active from disk manager. But appparently, that wasn't recognized by the installer.

Thanks for your help guys. I hope someone else can learn from my 20 hour, 5 install ordeal

D'OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well.. it;'s either WinRaR, or the Asus Sonar drivers.

cuz after installing them. it's back to no access!!!!

It was the Xonar drivers. I was using a beta version for winRC. Downloaded the new (zipped - no need for WinRaR) win 7 drivers, and voila! sound and access.

Try using only drivers installed by Windows 7. The installer is driver-complete except for any specialized drivers you have.

Check performance for awhile, then add the driver updates given by Windows Updates.

If you have any hardware in error in Device manager, add those drivers one by one to check for performance after each is added.

MS funded the development of Windows 7 drivers (WHQL) with each manufacturer, so they have the drivers first. This is not XP or Vista.
