Hello guys. I have a laptop with windows seven home basic installed on it. When it was shutting down, it was installing some updates first. I did not give it time to install the updates and press the power button to force it to shut down. Now when I press the power button on my laptop, I cannot see anything on the screen. I just hear a slight internal activity for sometimes but the screen remains black and then the power button keeps flashing. Any help please? Thank you

Clocker Welcome to SevenForums, Are you plugged in with your power adapter cord? Could be the battery. Did you try removing the battery and waiting a few then put it back in? Try pressing f8 rapidly after pushing the power button to get a screen for safe mode or other types of boot. Good luck to you and let us know what you have tried so far.:D

Very well could be... who knows?

Maybe he made a habit of a hard boot down. Not a very good thing to do in general, let alone while Windows is installing updates.

That message that almost fills the screen.. "Please don't shut down Windows is installing updates" is pretty hard to miss.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's time to start over with a fresh install of Windows.

As was said above, press F8 and try to get into Safe Mode. If you can, try to do a System Restore to a point before the updates. Let us know how things are going.

Thank you. I will also try that but I doubt putting the windows cd or pressing keys like F8 will work as it's like the laptop is in a sleep mode state. I power it on and the screen remains black and the power button keeps flashing. By the way it's a compaq presario laptop

You have probably done this, but power down the PC. If pressing buttons does not do this, unplug it. Let it sit a couple minutes and reboot. See if this gets you in.

NO.

IT's not a hardware problem. He said when he force shutdown (When he wasn'te supposed to) the screen went blank when he turned it on. So there for, the problem is within the system. If I were you, I would reinstall windows.
I think that could be a hardware problem.

I think you can reset the laptop by removing battery, unplugging and then holding the power button for 15 seconds. this will discharge all the capacitors. Then reinsert battery, plug in and turn it back on. See if that resets it.

<Edit: I think this above is also what Bigmck is suggesting.>

Are you getting anything on screen at all?

Windows also creates a restore point before doing the update, so if you are able to boot from the install disc, then you could do a system restore. I hope you are able to do this...

you may have to reset the CMOS in order to get it to boot again. Sometimes forcing a shutdown will lock it up. Not sure why it happens but I do know disconnecting the battery, the power cord, removing the CMOS battery, shorting out the connector to the CMOS battery, then holding down the power button for 10 - 30 seconds will cause the bios to do a hard reset on the next restart, which should solve your problem

its definately not a hardware problem, its a os problem.

get the windows cd and try a system restore?
