Right, I just started getting this error yesterday. I've had Win7 Ultimate for well over a year on my machine, no issues with it thus far, save for a few rendering issues after logging back into a locked computer, and for some reason, ATI drivers like to just die occasionally. Win7 seems to hate my graphics card >.<.

Aside from that, there have been no issues with anything, but yesterday, blue screens abound. No .sys errors from what I could tell, all drivers seem to be working optimally. I have not installed anything but games lately, which were on the computer previously anyways. These errors are suddenly occurring in EVERYTHING, from my computer sitting idle while locked to playing a game, and everything in between. I can just be sitting on my desktop, when Explorer.exe will crash, then the whole system will go to crap on me. I can move the mouse around in this period of freezings, but no input will be accepted. I have suspicions that it may be an IRQ based error, because I unplugged my USB keyboard once when the freezes started happening yesterday, and they stopped. About 10 minutes after I had the keyboard in again, the freezes started coming back. I unplugged the keyboard this time as well, but the BSOD still came up. The HEX values were:

0x000000c2 (BAD_POOL_CALLER) 0x00001097 0x08a10017 0x87586b00

This was the only screen I ever saw. There may have been different codes, but I have not caught them yet.

If there is any help or advice that can be given any which way, I am all ears. I've never encountered this before, and there seem to be few fixes other than a complete reinstall, which I would like to avoid if at all possible, due to me losing my retail disc. I disabled system restore/Volume Shadow Copy because I took my desktop off of the internet, and figured I wouldn't need it if all I was using it for was programming and movies/games. So sadly I kind of screwed myself there as well.

Thanks much! I will take a look. No dump files are included; but I will look at the info you have uploaded. Read this tutorial and upload the dump files if you have them. Review the last part of the first post in the tutorial and make sure your system is set for mini dumps. If you are using a cleaning program, make sure it is set not to delete dump files.

You have one problem device: Multimedia Controller - drivers for this device are not loaded.

Update the following drivers. Out of date drivers can and do cause memory corruption and crashes. The drivers in red font are particularly obsolete.

You probably have more out of date drivers. A dump file will make it quicker to find them; but I will keep digging.

I also notice that you have Tune Up Utilities running. Windows 7 does not need a tuneup utility. They can do more harm than good. I recommend that you uninstall this software. Here is my sermon on tuneup programs:

Windows 7 is a totally different operating system than XP. Win 7 is not an evolution from XP. It is a totally new OS and even changed from Vista. Thus the wisdom we learned about XP - tweaking, cleaning, modifying for speed, etc - do not apply at all to Win 7. Forget that knowledge.

Windows is a closed source system. Developers of tuneup utilities and registry cleaners do not have the core code of Win 7 and are not working on definitive information, but rather they are going on past knowledge and experience, most of which is not applicable to Win 7. Automatic cleaners will usually have to do some guesswork.

There is almost no tweaking that can be done to Win 7 to speed it up. The system is designed to diagnose itself and take care of itself which it does remarkably well. Win 7 maintains itself and that includes the registry.

Tuneup utilities are pure snake oil. At best they do nothing except use resources. At worst, they can mess your system up, slowing it down, and even crash it. There is no tuneup utility out there anywhere that can speed Win 7 up and improve its performance, at least not at this time.

This isn't to say that the system does not need to be maintained. Uninstall programs that you don't use, delete unneeded and unnecessary files. Defrag your hard drive. But don't screw with the registry unless you are an in depth expert in the Win 7 registry.

We have seen the adverse effects of tuneup utilities and registry cleaners and registry defraggers in the Crashes and Debugging Section. Most of the time, the cure is a clean install. Using a program such as Ccleaner is fine to get rid of old and unnecessary files. A tuneup utility is not only unneeded, it can actually harm your system. Don't use them.

I don't use tune up for the tune up features. I only used it to change my Logon screen, since stardock still didn't come out with a Logon screen util for Win7. As for the dump files, it turns out CCleaner did indeed delete those. C:\Windows\Minidump was empty. Actually, it was gone entirely. I wish I could get those so that I could give more concise information, but sadly I cannot. I will update those drivers however.

As for registry defraggers, I stay well clear of those after that one time in XP...hoo boy I spent a good chunk of my weekend figuring out what I broke. I do use Piriform Defraggler and CCleaner however. CCleaner does help with those obsolete extensions in the registry for programs I used months ago, and frequently finds stuff (like gigs in size stuff) that I no longer need. Thank you for all your advice though, this is a wonderful forum.

EDIT: That multimedia controller is a TV tuner card that is not supported by Win7. I was very sad about that, and have been on the prowl for drivers for months. Its a bit of a dated card (somewhere around 2005 if I remember right), but works beautifully.

Thanks for reporting back. I understand about the TV card; I have encountered this before. YOur best solution is to upgrade to a new card compatible with Win7. The one you have is XP hardware.

As long as you are not using the tuneup utility to "tuneup" your OS, you are fine. I also use Defraggler and Ccleaner. Both are good programs and work well with Win 7. I thought you probably had a cleaning program that cleaned out your dump files. I had the same experience with a registry cleaner in XP that you had. Fortunately, I had backed up the registry; so the fix was easy.

Let us know how your system is doing. If you get another BSOD, upload it and we will go from there. Maybe you have fixed it by updating those drivers - I hope.

I am downloading the drivers via my laptop now while in class. Good news to report though, since I came running to you guys, my computer has been behaving. I expect now that I have mentioned that, its gonna start being a baby again ha ha. But yes, I will get those drivers installed asap. My mobo is getting dated, so hopefully Gigabyte will have released a new driver set.
