I am still using windows 7 to do my online banking and paying bills as well as shopping. I hate the thought of going to windows 10 but wonder if this is safe to do with win 7. I could dual boot windows 10 I suppose, or buy a laptop to pay bills and bank. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks.

I bank and pay bills and shop online with Windows 7, and I don't have any issues.

Because we don't know how up-to-date Windows 7 is in your computer, and which browser(s) you use, and which antivirus and other security apps you use, and how safe your computing habits are, it's impossible to know if it's safe for you to use Windows 7.

If you are careful to note that you are actually securely connected (https) to your bank or credit card or whatever then W7 is as safe as any other OS. Re: shopping "safe" is less an OS thing than a "do I trust this vendor with my CC" thing. If you are paranoid in this regard Abine Blur gives you the ability to use a CC that is a one-off.

Paying bills and shopping on reputable and secure sites is no problem with win7 and an updated browser.
The problem is everything else you might do with the computer .. Downloads unknown files, visits insecure websites and so on, that can infect your computer with spyware, malware and remote execution software which then can affect when you shopping online and your banking stuff

I use mozilla firefox, microsoft security essentials, and malwarebytes free. I do not game at all. Search with duckduck go. I watch youtube mainly to find out how to fix my worn out junk that I cant afford to replace. I'm going to stick with 7 as long as I can. Every thing is up to date. Thanks for the reply's.

Use a VPN to encrypt your data in and out of your PC is also a good idea. I actually feel safer with Win7 than I would with 10 unless you jump through hoops to disable the Microsoft spyware! LOL Kill Cortana ! Kill Auto Update !

I had Win 10 on one machine and had to turn it into parts afterwards. Some how an update killed my video and not even MS support could fix it. I had to buy a new machine and will go to Linux before Win 10.

Need a better credit union! LOL I have two, one for banking a different for auto loan. I always use VPN both desktop and phone never a problem with either one. They should not be denying your security options.

Nope! Current Credit Union is fine with me! HTTPS & I have other security features enabled.
The IT dept, upon request, will permit VPN if a client wishes. I don't.

As long as you're careful in the usual way and use a good current browser, you should be fine. Why would it not be safe?
Or at least, as safe as it always was.

Be sure to check for HTTPS on every site, be sure to NOT ignore browser warnings, and close the page immediately if they happen, and not install any kind of certificate from anyone (many programs, notably antiviruses, force certificates on your computer to help "secure" you, make sure this don't happens).
When in doubt about the safety of your computer, reformat it.

Just standard security advice, nothing special about Windows 7 :p

No, it's not. In fact, you've now added an additional actor you need to trust, which puts stuff and configuration into your computer (the VPN client) and whose infrastructure has full access to your traffic. This is the opposite you want for a high-security site like banks and anything money related.
There are very few scenarios where VPNs actually help, and online banking from a safe network isn't one of them.

How does that helps the OP?
And what do you mean by "built in security"?
