I have a Toshiba laptop that was experiencing numerous problems so I decided to format and reinstall everything. Except this time instead of using the restore CDs I put Windows7 in without all the bundled software that came with the original "out of the box" state. WOW! It runs so much faster and smoother now...feels twice as fast when I first got it! Except oddly there are two devices labeled as "Base System Device" that won't install drivers. I don't notice anything wrong with the the laptop but I'm still curious.. is there any way to figure out what these devices are?

Here's what I can pull that might help.
Class Icon: setupapi.dll -18
Safe removal required: False
Enumerator: PCI
Physical Device Object Name: Device\NTPNP_PCI0023
Local Information: PCI bus 4, device 0, function 1

The other device is similar except the object name is PCI0024 instead of PCI0023, and function 2 rather than function 1.

PS: I did search the forums and find driver details for a Sony, but I'm not about to put Sony drivers in my Toshiba.

Well, to be honest, I don't know exactly what these devices are, but I think it may be an Ethernet controller or other PCI device.

To search drivers for them: Insert the disc that you have acquired with your laptop, and open device manager. Double click on one of these devices, switch to the Driver tab, and click Reinstall Driver. Select, that you want to specify a location, and enter the letter of your CD drive. (e.g. E:\), and make sure, Include Subfolders is checked. Click next, and this should solve the problem.

It is the A505-S6960, I don't think I posted S6906 any where? I'm a bit hesitant to put Toshiba drivers in, as last time they caused a lot of OS problems that a restore didn't fix. I have the three recovery disk, I may pop one of those in and scan for drivers on them like CBS suggested, at least that way -- if it works -- I can find out what the device is before installing.

Oh by the way I'm on Windows 7 64 bit and the laptop came with Vista 64 bit.
(Update) Recover disk were of no use.

I get that you might be hesitant about Toshiba drivers, but the reason that I suggested them was because laptop makers often tweak the hardware for various reasons. Often, the generic OS drivers don't fully support the laptop's hardware, which is probably the issue that you're having now. So, if Toshiba has a Win 7 driver for those items, it probably would be best if you installed those, rather than other drivers.

Usually, you can download a driver "pack" and unzip it. Then you can do as CBS suggested and just install the missing ones.

Good luck.

vp7win, in your "My System Specs" you have:

System Manufacturer/Model Number Toshiba A505-S6906

That's where I got the number from.

I would definitely install the Chipset driver I gave you the link for. Create a System Restore point first just in case. The Chipset install may also create a restore point but it's always better top make sure.

As a rule the base system device's are usually the card reader either Ricoh like Dinesh has stated or Texas Instruments and lastely Conexant.
So go to your download drivers page on Toshiba support.find your model # and look for your card reader drivers.
If no Windows Seven drivers are avalible then use compatibility mode to install either Vista or XP drivers. Heres how to use it http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/316-compatibility-mode.html Fabe

I tried installing a lot of the packaged Toshiba drivers and the two items still remain on the list. One of the apps attempted to install drivers for my hard drive and dvd-r ? That failed though, the two items remain. All my USB slots work fine, DVD-R fine, SD memory card slot fine, HDMI -- vga fine, modem fine..probably just shouldnt worry about it then. I'm not going to risk messing up my system just to track down a ghost thats not even a huge problem.

Edit:
Forgot to try the Ricoh drivers, just did and they worked.. Thanks!!

Ok my friend I think I have the solution for your problem.
I have the same Toshiba A505-S6960 which I upgraded to Win 7 and I found that the same two base system devices were not recognized by this OS. After several hours of research I found that those devices were:
1 CARD READER RICOH (file size 6.62mb)
2 USB SLEEP AND CHARGE (file size 6.63mb)
All you need to do is to find the correct driver for them by going to Toshiba’s web site Model Content Page
and start looking for this Toshiba Model A505-S6999. After that, select your operating system and download the two drivers as I listed above. Remember, these devices are not listed under Toshiba A505-S6960. However; they could be found under Toshiba A505-S6999. I HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS USEFUL RESEARCH I DID.
You may want to download the face recognition application that you can find there too.
