Basic all-in-one printer/scanner/copier

Hi all,

Newbie here.

I'm in the market for a basic all-in-one inkjet printer/scanner/copier. I've stumbled across Hewlett Packard Deskjet F2480 (CB730A) All-In-One InkJet Printer repeatedly - is it any good for the cash?

It's about the best you can do at that price point.

in my experience you are better off with a Canon since HP often has expensive ink. they give you the printer for almost free, but kill you with ink. Bakc nt he old days I had a HP with $ 50 per black cartridge, a Canon cost $ 10. for the Canon I even coudl get off-brand ink for $ 5. It's an old example and may not apply anymore, though. but they deliver the printer with only 1/3 full tank (they call it economy ink.. economical for them I guess)

i don't know that specific model, but you should see what the ink cost. If you print more than one colored page a month, you also should get one with 3 or more color tanks (red, green, blue) instead of one with all 3 colors in one cartridge.
there are some refill shops that have cheaper ink. But HP often has the printer head included int he tank. with that you always have to replace the entire (expensive) head

some better home models can even print double-sided (I don't mean manually printing even and odd pages, but the printer actually turns the page and prints on both sides.)

I would agree that the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) is pore important that the initial printer hardware cost.

Canon and Epson are the two best known names providing separate ink cartridges

With the HP printers the cost of the cartridges will be substantial. I would also opt for Canon - but make sure you pick a model with individual cartridges. Those you can easily refill yourself and cut the cost by 90%.
In addition, I found Canon to be very helpful in case of problems. They replaced one of my expensive photo printers after more than 2 years free of charge. It had a problem pulling the paper in. In addition to that one I own 4 Canon multifunction printers that never gave me a problem.

I had an Epson CX4500, a basic all-in-one, it went through ink cartridges at an unbelievable pace. Printing 2 pages or 50, the ink ran out right at two weeks, and they're not cheap.

Found a few websites with people saying the same thing. You could shake the cartridge and tell there was ink still in there.
Very difficult to get it to print in black ink if one of the color cartridges is claimed to be empty, got it to work for a while, but then refused to do it.

To make a long story shorter, I'll never buy a Epson printer again.

YMMV...
