Basic Network Scanning Software

I'm looking for something free or with a trial period that would allow me to scan my network and get basic device info for all connected computers, mainly processor speed, memory, etc. I am the admin of the company, so access rights aren't a problem.

I may be leaving for a new job in the near future, so I'd like to have some things very well documented for the person coming in.

As a side bonus..if the app could read Dell service tags, that would be great, but not necessary.

I think that Nmap is the best scanner.

I would suggest either Spiceworks or a Linux distro called Pandora. Spiceworks will tell you just about everything you could need to know about what's on your network, you just have to deal with the ads in the side of the web interface. (not too distracting).

I vaguely remember Spiceworks (or maybe I'm thinking of something else). Didn't that require it to be installed on a server with a mini-SQL DB or SQL Express to be installed as well?

No, Spiceworks doesn't require a SQL Database to my knowledge.

Spiceworks, for the ammount of detail provided. Spiceworks uses SNMP for it's device scans.
If you're looking for a more advanced scan, nmap will allow port scans and hidden device scans, but has very little detail to the type of device.

Yeah, NMAP/ZenMAP is good for port scans, see what is open on machines. Spiceworks will tell you the make, model, RAM count, HDD space, people who login, software installed (really useful) and in most cases, the serial number for the software that is installed. (really useful for auditing compliance). Plus a plethora of other information you may or may not need. It'll even tell you toner levels for printers. ^_^
