First turn off UAC http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/299-user-account-control-uac-change-notification-settings.html Option 1 (take note of your current setting before turning it off) after you are done changing your .dll/file turn the UAC back to your current settings. Be sure to restart after turning it off and then again when turning it back on.

Right click on the .dll/file and go to 'properties'.
1.png2.png

Click on the 'security' tab. Click 'Advanced'.
3.png

Click on the 'Owner' tab. Click 'Edit'.
4.png

Select your user and click Apply then OK.
5.png

You will get this if you have UAC on click OK.
6.png

Click OK on the next box.
7.png

Click OK on the next box.
8.png

Then OK on the final box.
9.png

Now right click on the .dll/file again and go to 'Properties'
10.png11.png

Click on the 'security' tab. Click 'Edit'.
12.png

Select 'Users'. In the bottom part of the box, tick the box to allow 'Full Control' and click Apply then OK.
13.png

You will get this if you have UAC on click Yes.
14.png

Click OK then OK again on the last box.
15.png16.png

You now own that .dll/file and have full permissions over it.

Now right click the .dll/file
17.png

Rename
18.png

Rename the .dll/file to .bak like shell32.bak.dll
Note: I use .old on shell32 all others I use .bak
Then paste in your replacement file.
19.png

You will have both .dll & .bak.dll if you need to go back.

Took a quick look at the directions, which to me are very clear, even though I have yet to complete this activity. I shall, of course, write a new post once I have completed the task. Thank you, it's nice to see something described in so matter-of-fact way!

I followed the above advice based on wanting to replace 'DDORes.dll' since elsewhere on these forums it said that this was the file responsible for the 'Device and Printers' icons. Which it turned out not to be. Anyhow, I replaced 'DDORes.dll' with one from my windows DVD and renamed the original one '.old' Now both the original renamed 'old' and the new one are editable, changeable etc. How do I reverse what was done so that the file becomes untouchable again? thank you

Hello pintree,

To do so, you could set your account back to only having "Read & execute" and "Read" permissions instead of "Full control", then set the owner back to the default "TrustedInstaller". :)
