Hey guys!I've had this problem for awhile, but I didn't think it was serious.
The battery icon never shows 'plugged in' when the AC is connected. It wouldn't be a problem, but when I try to install a driver it always requests the charging mode...and my windows 7 ultimate edition x64 does not recognise when i plug in the AC.Help, please!
p.s: i've got a hp compaq presario laptop.

All bios updating needs the computer to be running on AC power, thats normal. Its a safety precaution because if there is a power interruption or the computer enters into standby/hibernation while on battery power, its quite likely the motherboard will get bricked.

Is this the first time you're updating the bios? Make sure you do it only if there is a specific benefit/ problem resolution from doing so and do be careful.

it's the first time i try to update my bios.the AC is plugged in,but the battery icon doesn't show that(it says 100% remaining). It's been like this for awhile, but I didn't think it was a problem, so I didn't try to fix it,until i realized i cannot update bios.:(

In other words, you get the message that AC is not connected when it actually is? Did you check whether the battery is actually getting charged, that is whether you are able to use it for the 2-3 hrs or whatever the battery usually provides? Your battery may be going bad or the AC adapter might be broken or the power-in jack may be faulty, swap these out with spare ones and check. Worst case it could be a hardware failure E.g. the mobo battery circuit may be faulty.

BTW, postpone the bios update till you get this battery issue sorted out.

the battery charges normally when it's discharged.my laptop works when i unplug the ac,until the battery discharges.i guess it has nothing to do with the battery and the ac.the only sign that there's something wrong is this icon which shows "100% remaining" instead of "plugged in,fully charged" or whatever.

Well if you think its a windows issue, you can try run a repair install to fix corrupted system files. look for the tut in the tuts section.

i have seen this with hp laptops, one suggestion i have seen is to power down the laptop (switch it off not sleep or hibernate) then remove the battery, then turn it on without the battery, wait till it gets to the desktop, then turn it off and plug the battery back in. I have had a problem with the battery gadget showing plugged in not charging, but not your specific problem. I might suggest that you try to get another charger to see if you have the same problem, it could be yours is working enough to charge the battery, but not at correct specs.
