Battery Malfunction Overvoltage

Hello, I am a new member, but I have gotten much help before from reading this forum and thought maybe someone on here may know what to do.

I have a Gateway MD7822 laptop and has worked great until recently I have been getting a steady red light meaning a battery malfunction. When I plug it in it says that it is plugged in but not charging. Then when I take it off AC power it says that it is at 0%.

I used the live Gateway chat and the tech suggest a BIOS flash and he gave me instructions on how to do it and gave me a link to a download for the updated BIOS. However, before I could read them or write down the chat number he generated, he logged out and it immediately switched to a post chat review.

I followed the instructions that I remembered, but was unable to complete the process. However the file he gave me was for Vista (which is what my computer came loaded with) and I am not sure if that makes any difference.

I did however attempt to recalibrate my battery using BIOS and it said that it was a battery malfunction calling it an overvoltage. I removed my battery for a night and when I put it back in it seemed to be working again until it got 100% charged, at which point it started doing it again.

I am not sure what is causing it, whether it be my battery, my AC adopter or if I really need to flash my BIOS. And since I am not sure what I am doing and after finding what BIOS is I really don't want to flash my BIOS unless I have to.

I am hoping someone on here can help me with my problem.

I have:
*Gateway MD7822
*Windows 7 Home Premium
*Original AC adapter
*Original Battery

It is still under warranty by Gateway, too, so if I need a new battery or AC adapter.

The first step would be to try a different battery. Then a different charger to eliminate them.
You should be able to get the instructions on flashing your bios form the Gateway website support page.

Ok, thanks for your response Ken.

Only problem is that I don't have any other batteries or AC adapters for my laptop.

And finding the instructions on how to flash the BIOS on my computer is harder than it would seem.

Update: I emailed Gateway support and they have decided to send me a new battery. Hopefully that works. However I am still open to advice as to what may have caused it or if it was just a defective battery on their part.

Just wundering if you got the problem solved. Because I have the smae problem.... Almost the same machine.
