So I thought I'd start a thread for this game in particular.

It's supposed to come out Q4 2011 sporting a brand new engine: Frostbite 2.0.

Latest we've heard is that, supposedly tomorrow we should see something BF3 related getting shown/released.

PlanetBattlefield says it's the launch of the battlefield3.com web site:

I'm guessing the Battlefield 3 website will launch tomorrow. The DNS record was updated yesterday (Feb 2nd) http://bit.ly/hidNyX #BF3
Twitter

Also, the cover for the march issue of the gameinformer magazine features BF3:

Sorry, trailer doesn't state it.

A Battlefield game with no multiplayer won't be a true Battlefield game :p

I can't wait for it myself, but slightly annoyed DICE have said they won't released Onslaught for BC2 and Battlefield 1943 for PC :/

cool, frostbite 2 :D
i just got this information from other forums:
Battlefield 3 leaps ahead of the competition with the power of Frostbite™ 2, the next instalment of DICE’s cutting-edge game engine. This state-of-the-art technology is the foundation on which Battlefield 3 is built, delivering superior visual quality, a grand sense of scale, massive destruction, dynamic audio and incredibly lifelike character animations. As bullets whiz by, walls crumble, and explosions throw you to the ground, the battlefield feels more alive and interactive than ever before. In Battlefield 3, players step into the role of the elite U.S. Marines where they will experience heart-pounding single player missions and competitive multiplayer actions ranging across diverse locations from around the globe including Paris, Tehran and New York

Battlefield 3 features:

* Frostbite 2 – Battlefield 3 introduces Frostbite 2, the incredible technology that takes animation, destruction, lighting, scale and audio to new heights. Built upon this powerful game engine, Battlefield 3 immerses players physically and emotionally to the world around them like never before.
* Feel the Battle — Feel the impact of bullets and explosions, drag your fallen comrades into safety, and mount your weapon on almost any part of the terrain. Battlefield 3’s cutting edge animation, spectacular visuals and real as hell battle gameplay attack your senses and make you feel the visceral warriors experience like no other FPS.
* Unparalleled Vehicle Warfare — The best online vehicle warfare experience gets even better with a fitting sonic boom as fighter jets headline impressive lineup of land, air and sea vehicles.
* Urban Combat — Take the fight to iconic and unexpected places in the USA, Middle East, and Europe including claustrophobic streets, metropolitan downtowns, and open, vehicle-friendly landscapes as you fight your way through the war of tomorrow.

BF3 really looks cool, i think i need to get this on my PC. can't wait for a screenshot.
i think this game will compete with homefront.

I am so painfully looking forward to this game. I've been a huge fan of Frostbite since the beginning, even when I felt like us PC Gamers got left out.. I was even a fan when they dropped Frostbite, as an engine basically built for multi-plat, but not at all for the PC, at least as I understood at the time.

Over time I've realized DICE has been taking baby steps, these battlefield games have been testing the waters, feeling out the industry, and building on what works. Well the Bad Company games really surprised a number of people, especially with BC2 on the PC side last year, nobody could have imagined the code could be so uncommonly good on x86. The truth lies in the code, DICE have been building this as a 'true' multiplat from the start, and sacrificed nothing, but maybe some time, on the PC end. The DX10 and DX11 code is very mature and myself, was really blown away at how well it worked on console, and then on PC, taking full advantage of multi-core, DX10/11, and Windows 7.

Battlefield 3 should be amazing, BF2 in a modern engine, multiplat with no sacrifice on PC, even if we lose Onslaught and 1943; though, I will recall this when the game drops, and if it's anything but spectacular on PC I won't forget what they've said.

Yeah that smoke does look nice, but what would make it amazing; if they could manage to use dynamic, volumetric smoke, where it looks very real, and objects can interact and affect the smoke. For example, say there's a ploom of smoke coming out the back of a tank, when a soldier runs through the smoke, the smoke is affected by it. Anyone who's playing Stalker - Clear Sky knows what I mean, it's the only game I've played with volumetric smoke that was also dynamic. Crysis has volumetric smoke, but it's not dynamic, altough the volumetric lighting is dynamic.

It would give the game some extreme atmosphere/realism, but it's extremely taxing on hardware, and because different looking smoke for users using different settings would severely impact fair play, I doubt we'll see it anytime soon. (Kind of like the issue on PC, where certain settings would allow DX11 users to see through glass windows, and DX10 users couldn't; this DX11 feature was throroughly badass, but couldn't be implemented for those reasons, so they fell back on a DX9/DX10-optimized feature, to accomodate winXP users, and even vista/7 users, but those who had only DX9/10 hardware) .....SOO happy to see DX9/XP not supported, I can't imagine how much that code was holding back the engine, this alone should make huge improvements to the system, but I guess it will suck for people who won't be able to afford to upgrade...

Otherhwise I hope to see the engine take far more advantage of DX11 and multi-core. Since it will be base DX10, this can be done without adverse effect to those running DX10 capable Gpu's. More than anything I want the performance enhancements of DX11. Some DX11 graphical features would be nice also, like tessellation where applicable, everything from vehicles, characters to the environment, but I'm sure with FB2.0 destruction will be first on their list.

Edit: If anyone would like to join me in BC2, hit me on Steam: DHRammstein

Nice post mate!.

And I agree 100%. Especially the part suggesting that FB2.0 needs to take more advantage of DX11's goodness.

IIRC FB2.0' been rewritten from the ground up from it's previous version, meaning that it'll most certainly feature stuff like Tessellation, which repi (DICE's rendering architect) almost confirmed on his twitter account a while back.

One thing's for certain though, the lightning is going to be sick. Real-time radiosity seems too good to be true. Gameinformer's has this tidbit of information stored for us:

Lighting sounds neat, one "probe" contains more lighting information than an entire BFBC2 level.

I would be willing to bet as follows as 'minimum' required to play: (Well, this is what I would want on the box, they will dumb it down a bit)

Any 2.0Ghz Quad Core or better
4GB of Ram (They may say lower, but we know better than that...)
GeForce 8800GT/ Radeon HD 2900
Windows Vista/7
Broadband

Recommended I'd bet:
Any 2.0Ghz Quad Core
4GB Ram
GeForce GTX 275/GTS 450 Radeon HD 4870/5830 (DX11 cards will see better performance)
Vista/7 (7 will be better I'm certain of it)

In my opinion a 3Ghz quad, 4GB, Nv GTX 460+/Radeon HD 5850+ Really want to be able to take advantage of DX11, and with that code a quick quad to keep from bottlenecking.

I am looking forward to this! Also just to add the game is being designed for pc and ported to consoles unlike most previous games. This game will destroy BC2 and COD:BO. PC players will be locked on this game for years. It's about time we finally see a sequel.
