BD Rewriter

I started out looking for a regular DVD writer, when I came across this:

This is considerably cheaper than other BD writers that I have seen, but one thing bugs me...why do they call it a REwriter?

The RE in REwriter denotes that indeed BD-RE disks can be used. They are a similar fomat like DVD-RW and can be used many times, hence "REwriter"

But a Blu Ray disk reader will only playback Blu Ray disks BD-ROM.

Thanks, I kind of thought it was something like that, but wanted to hear it from someone else. The price of the drive isn't bad, but I don't know how much that I would use it, because of media prices. However, I did find a 25 pack of 4x Taiyo Yuden BD-R LTH for $42.99, however from what I read, not all BD drives are compatible with the LTH version. I may be just day dreaming, because I can't think of anything that I do or need that requires that much disc space.

I purchased and installed the LG WH10LS30 Super Multi Blu-ray Rewriter but have yet to burn any discs. Some newer backup/imaging like Paragon Backup and Recovery 2011 Free Edition will let you back up your computer to Blu ray disc. Also several DVD movies could be burned to Blu ray for backup purposes perserving the origanals. (IE: Ideal if you have small children or travelling cross-country by car with them)

Yes, I do undestand the value of a BD burner for many people. However, I do not have a need for movie DVDs, since I only watch them at home, and I have found it convenient to eliminate the need for using DVDs. That leaves data storage, which was my original interest, since a backup would fit on a lot fewer discs, but that would be redundant for me, because I have also found it convenient and much cheaper to store my backup images on a hard drive. At least on the hard drive, I don't have to worry about losing or damaging the discs, nor cramming my DVD shelves or albums any fuller than they already are.

Somehow I have a feeling that I would find a use for BD burning, but at the moment, it is unclear what that would be. My curious side want it, but my tight side doesn't. I simply enjoy having as many options available as possible, whether I ever use them or not. As I mentioned, even if I already had a BD burner, my tight side would still balk at the cost of media. However, instead of probably needing 11 DVDs for a backup, it would probably require only 3 BD discs, but that would be ~ $3.30 for the DVDs vs ~ $5.16 if I could use the LTH discs. It would make sense to use rewritable media, except that they would cost ~ $15.00 or more per disc, which I'm certain that my tighter side would not permit. I will probably go with my original plan and order a regular DVD burner, because I really like LightScribe, and the only thing offered at the supermediastore.com is even more expensive. I keep hoping that the price of the media would go down, but that hasn't happened yet.
