When I set up windows, I did not know about the hidden built in Administrator account. Now I know, but my user account (which I thought was the same as admin just with my name on it) has too many things on it to delete and start over.

Is there a way I can boot into the admin account, take over my user account then delete that account?

You can change the settings of the UAC, I will post the tutorial on this

In addition take ownership and permissiions

Take Ownership of file - Vista Forums

I believe this is the best course of action.

This enables the "hidden" admin account, and as richie said, is not for everyday use. You should use this account to make a new one, with the name you prefer, then copy all files from the old account, then delete it. After that, disable the "hidden" acc by typing net user administrator \active:no

There was a mistake:

net users Administrator /active:yes

This should be allright now.

To undo: net users Administrator /active:no

Why can't I use the hidden Admin account for everyday use?

I only want ONE account on my computer, Period... hidden or otherwise; The account with the most power.

I can see this is a good idea for newbies, but for a guy like me who has used Windows since Windows 3.1, I feel I should have the one only account that is the Administrator account with the most power. Just like it used to be until Microsoft decided to change things and make life difficult for us power users.

This Hidden account thing is a new feature that is not necessary and a headache for an old Windows user. I believe every user should have the right to choose this as an option when he first installs Windows.

Edit:

Another thing.. I plan to rename this hidden admistrator account after I migrate everything. Will that cause a problem?

Also, I do not like to have the UAC enabled. I'd delete it completely if I could. It's off and disabled in services now. Will I lose some admin functionality if I disable this for the Admin account?

I agree, you own the computer and you should make the final decision. The benefit of this forum is that you can avail yourself to various opinions. With that information, you can choose the best course of action for yourself. Coolness was giving his opinion, which you are free to use or to disregard. I think that this sharing of opinions is a benefit of this Forum. I, do, however, hope that you were not offended in any way.

Oh No, not at all... The post above was just my way of waxing philosophical. Likewise I do not mean to offend anyone.

That's the problem with written speech. You cannot read body language see facial expression or hear telling nuances in a voice that isn't there. We need a new type of punctuation system to cover those areas.

I tend to look in written language like I am fussing but the intent is not there.

Yeah, you can take my advice or not, but i just want to tell you this: You ask, why is the admin account not for casual use? Well, Thats because its huge security hole. Let's say some hacker gets a trojan in your computer. Then, if youre logged in as a admin, he can just do whatever he wants, without entering a password. The UAC helps, a little (a function copied from Linux OS's), but still is not enough. Dont take my word for it, look at this article at microsoft.com.

Thanks.. that's a really good reason for someone who doesn't have his PC protected to the hilt, or just any regular normal Joe not to use the admin account as his only account.

I feel that does not apply in my case though. I use strong security tools that a hacker cannot get into and even if he managed to do so, I could restore my PC in less than 5 minutes. I could be Admin, and get hit with something that deletes half my windows core files and all my registry and would make my system otherwise totaly crippled and unbootable and just laugh at it. I could recover easily from that and know that the recovered files were super clean and were not hiding a trojan. The only thing I might really lose is a couple of hours work which to me is nothing because I don't use my system for anything so critical I cannot re-create the work.

Hackers theese days dont want you to lose stuff, they will spy on you without you knowing it, they will keylog you, take all your passwords, empty your back account... And no anti-virus/firewall is that good.

Excellent point to keep in mind for people who want to use the main admin for their only account.

I do not have any personal information on my computer. Not even my real name. If they want to steal my passwords and spy on my forum usage I say let them.. might be better than a book or a movie. LOL Or perhaps they will die of boredom. As far a using my forum accounts or email to spam others, The accounts can always be deleted and remade.

Coolness, I am not trying to be argumentative. Just making the point that if your going to insist on doing risky things then you have to be sure you protect yourself.

How to enable the built in administrator account:
from the start menu: right click "computer" and select "manage"
expand local users and groups and click on the users folder
right click on "administrator" and select properties
Uncheck "account is disabled

I really think that you need to be convinced that you should'nt use that account. And if i run out of words, then you can use the account, you can even stop reading these posts, and use the account.

But, most people use online banking, in which you have to enter your passwords, pins account numbers and stuff. THey will catch all that.

Maby you dont belive in these treaths, and dont want to listen to my posts, but i've made my point.

I do appreciate your advice, really I do. I think we have covered all the bases on the dangers of using the hidden Admin account as your only account.

Because I have refused to use my computer in a manner that has any personal data on it, and I have everything backed up really well and protected I cannot see any harm that it could do.

I have had Windows operating system in the past that didn't even have such an account and I never had any kinds of problems.. and they were not as protected as this one.

I feel a person should be able to do whatever he wants with his disk operating system as long as he understands the risks involved and is willing to live with the consequences of his actions. If I did keep sensitive data on my system, I would agree with you 100% and not take the risk.

Again, I humbly thank you for your concern.
