4 of the last 9 Toshiba laptops that I've purchased for people in the last 3 years have had bad keyboards. Two had one or more keys did not work from day one. The other two had failures w/in the first few months... but I like the features per dollar. Sadly this malady is not limited to the low end Toshiba line, I've seen it in the Qosmio line too.

Maybe they've got that fixed by now.

Both laptops are pretty good, so it really depends on what you want to do with them, but I would personally go for the Asus in this case, mainly because of the fact that it has higher specs for a lower price.

As far as I know, Asus also usually has a much better quality than Toshiba, at least from my experience (mainly bad with Toshiba, and extremely good with Asus (both my laptops being Asus, one being 4.5 years old, the other one (G53) just a few months old).

I second that. Or you can get a Gateway, Asus's top of the line models. I got a gateway nv51b and couldnt be happier.

I don't know where you got Gateway being Asus's top of the line, as far as I know, and the google search I just did to confirm, Gateway is a completely other company. Also I've never seen a good quality Gateway, personally.

Thing is, LCD is still pretty good imo. We don't need the best screens out there, the average user doesn't see the difference between the screens. For example my G53 has a very good quality 1920x1080 screen with a very good image, even if it is lcd.

according to gold old wikipedia, Gateway is owned by Acer, not Asus, since 2007.

Gateways are great. Even my local BestBuy prefers Gateways over HP or Toshiba

Without looking any options, I highly recommend ASUS G74 110%. Without even looking at the options, if you can find a brand new one, I would even suggest ASUS G72 with i7 100%.
(Yes, I know, I skipped G73, when you put G72 and G73 next to each other, you will see the difference)

P.S.: I looked at the options now.
ASUS has
- internal USB 3.0
- 8 GB RAM (Toshiba has 4)
- backlit keyboard
- GTX 560M with 2GB (Toshiba has 460M with 1.5GB)
- i7 (Toshiba has i5)
- ASUS gives you Windows and Drivers DVD, and also recovery DVD (Toshiba doesn't)

After looking at the options, I suggest even getting ASUS G72 with the best processor you can find. In this G74, I didn't see express card or firewire option (maybe they listed wrong on the page linked, I am not sure), but G72 has em, just G72 does not have internal USB 3.0. G72 has GTX260M though instead of 560M.

So, my suggestion is, making a choice between ASUS G72 (if you can find) and G74; forget about Toshiba!

Of the two laptops you have listed, the Asus is by far the better laptop; much better processor and better graphics card.
