Hello, I am looking to upgrade my laptop from XP to Windows 7. Can anyone tell me the best place I can buy a key for cheap? I am looking for Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate, and I really don't care which one. I would like to do a fresh install not an "upgrade", though my computer is currently running a windows product as we speak. Hopefully the place I buy the key from will also have the software available for download. I have heard people mention finding licenses for $30-$40 before. Thank you all in advance for any help you can give me.

You can't actually "upgrade" from XP to Win7 as MS only allows upgrades from one Windows version to the next.

As to price, anything that cheap is likely to be a stolen MSDN license, and while it might work in the beginning, eventually, it will be caught by MS and disabled.

This advice has been passed down to me from my father, who learned it from his father, who learned it from an old wise man.

Always buy a license from a reputable retailer like Amazon, Newegg, TigerDirect, ect. In the case of Windows, buy the CD from them. I don't think there are many legitimate retailers that sell Windows keys but I may be wrong.

NEVER ever buy a license from one of those cheap gray market retailers. Just spend the extra money. Trust me, and everyone else who responded. And I know for a fact many others will agree with me on this. Just buy it at full price.

If you buy something from one of those discount sites, 1) you don't know who you are dealing with and 2) Microsoft might decide that the keys bought from these people are no good and deactivate the entire batch of them (this happened recently with Sniper Elite 3, a video game. People bought the key from these unknown sellers and the developer deactivated the keys.)
