This question is subjective but imo the kmplayer is by far the best HD video player especially when you consider it is free. It has played every format I have threw at it (although I do favour mkv) and it has lots of variables for both visual and audio
I don't like it for taking care of music because it has this annoying feature that insists on creating album art for every single song so I stick with wmp for that.

Last week I compared this to VLC and discovered that VLC was using 10% more CPU than WMP12+Shark.....so for DVD's I've gone back to WMP12+Shark's codecs.Windows Media Player + Shark007's wmp 12 codecs

VLC is good for all files, but windows media player is best for basic audio files as it has the playlist on the right.

Good question.. I don't have anything in .mkv format so I wouldn't know.

Actually .mkv and .flv is not played in wmp out of the box. I use shark 007's codec to play mkv in wmp. though I dont like flv to play in my monitor, it it is not online.

Try another player, like MPC-HC. The HW acceleration should help to decode 1080p videos.
