I know this isn't a programming forum, but this is the best forum around on the Internet, so I was just wondering what is the best programming language to learn?

I have had a feel of all three of the languages which is I know are very similar in syntax, but would be the most beneficial language?

Thanks,

Harry

I was in the same boat, wanting to learn a language and no idea where to start, decided by going to the local auction site and buying the cheapest books and ended up starting with C++ (6 books cost $10NZD), now thinking about JAVA. Good luck with what ever you choose! it's all about what YOU want to use it for!

The more you are familiar with, the more it will benefit you! If you can learn to be proficient in more than one, you'll be golden.

Thanks for the replies, the language I would say I would know the most is C++, which is the parent of both of Java and C#, so guess C++ is the way forward (kind of my favorite one too :P)

I have a C++ book and a C# book, as well as, a very good YouTube tutorial series I know of for Java.

So learn C++ for now, then move onto C# or Java.

Thanks again,

Harry

I saw recently in an article that Java Developers are in big demand. However as quoted above, the more you learn, the more versatile you are. So far in school I've had Java, PHP & VB.

Personally, I would say C++. A lot of languages were heavily influenced by it, so its a good first language. Also, you can compile C++ on almost anything... even a phone (Ex: C4Droid). It has been said that if you can program in C++, you can program in almost any other programming language (or at least learn to).

I know, C++ is the parent of Java and C#, and is the common basis for OOP programming languages.

C++ is also my favourite language, and seems much clearer than Java.

Many people think of PHP, Ruby on Rails or Python and Django when choosing a language to create a new website or when choosing a language to learn to get that exciting new job. .NET, however, seems to occupy a space somewhat apart from this playground of cool kids. It’s always the last to be picked for team sports; it was shouting “Wassup!” at parties well after 2000; and it has been just plain left out in the cold. Learning languages like C#, vb.net , asp.net etc. is no longer something that is done within a classroom. Sites like Net-Informations.Com - Free online resource for Microsoft .NET developers .net tutorials enable people who have no prior knowledge of such languages learn all there is to know using their computers, in the comfort of their own rooms.

I know this thread is really old, but thanks for your input Clint :)

The .NET Framework isn't exactly my favorite thing, and doesn't really work well with C++. Just as an update, I decided that I was going to study C++, I'm catching up on all the things I forgotten or half forgotten.
