Best screenshot taking software?

For some reason Windows 7 downscales my screenshots saved in .BMP from a program called TotalMedia Theatre I use. XP didn't do this, but of course I want to use 7 now, so if there isn't a setting to keep original image resolution/quality, what would be the best software for it that allows for lossless screenshot functionality? Slow motion would also be a good option.

I've tried the latest VLC player but snapshots of the same footage to .PNG format results in a slightly smaller file size than from TotalMedia Theatre , which would suggest lower quality. Is there a way to change that?

Thanks for any help.

I like Jing too - especially since you can program it to a function key, but only for stills. The videos are very poor quality. Faststone Capture is another good one. This is the last free version. It now costs $19.95.

Personally I just use printscreen, but I'm old school. If you're looking to capture live gaming then go for X-Fire, you can use it to stream your screen.
