Can anyone recommend a good sound editing program? I have been using Audacity but it is driving me nuts! It is SLOW and CLUNKY and frequently freezes and crashes on my system (Win 7 64-bit). There has GOT to be a better sound editor out there. What do you recommend?

Thanks for any and all advice!

You have to be having some other problems as I don't recall anyone else complaining about the problems you are having. Audacity is very popular and even supplied with some (low price) audio equipment. Are you using the "beta" version? which is what is recommended for Windows 7.

I have a home recording studio (with Sonar and Pro Tools) and I use Goldwave for audio editing. Goldwave is not free but is a very good and useful audio editor www.goldwave.com

good free alternatives to audacity include wavosaur and power sound editor.

the wavosaur website says the software works with win98, xp and vista, and doesn't mention 7 at all - but it works fine on my 64bit system. it's only one exe file as well - and will work with VST plugins.

i'm not sure if any of my two suggestions are the 'best' though.

I am using Audacity 1.3.13 on Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit with no problems and have not heard of others having issues until I read this thread. I'd guess your issue is something peculiar to your PC.

I think version 1.3.14 is available.

Sorry, but I am not having any other problems with any other programs other than Audacity. I have a top of the line ASUS laptop with PLENTY of horse power and RAM running Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and Audacity bogs down, freezes and crashes all the time...

I didn't say I wanted a "free" editor--I'd pay for a good sound editing program that actually worked well on my system.

Yeah, I guess it's just me . I was running 1.3.13 but recently downloaded 1.3.14 with no apparent sign of improvement.

I still say there is an issue with your PC, whether it's what programs you have running when you use Audacity or a configuration isse. You are the ONLY ONE that I can recall that has complained about the problems you have. I do a lot of support on the Dell users forum and I haven't seen any posts with the complaint you have, actually very few posts about Audacity and those were user configuration errors within Audacity.

The Goldwave that I referenced is an audio "editor" but it will also record, both from the System Mixer or individual devices such as Line In, Mic, etc (if you use the System Mixer it will then record from any device - the same as Audacity).

OK, I just tried it again. I opened a wave file and played it. A few seconds into the playback the entire Audacity program turned white and the title bar said: Not Responding". I can't be the only one experiencing this!

I have no idea what is happening with your PC. There are other forum sections dealing with crashes and maybe posting there will help to find the problem.

As the others have stated ... you might have a top notch system but it could still have a faulty part/driver. If you could fill in your system spec in full it would help immensely. :)
In the meantime you could have a looky here audio-editing-software-review but I tend to agree with the others "Audacity" is pretty bullet proof, so maybe you are experiencing some other issues that we could maybe help with ;)

i do think reason is a bit of an expensive hammer to crack a nut - it's a whole virtual studio, not a wave editor! i'm not even sure if it can edit waves!

it's a bit like suggesting photoshop when all you want to do is a bit of cropping!

come on, be reasonable! ;)

I've been using Sound Forge software for about 10 years. Sony bought it about 6 years ago, and actually made it better. Very easy to use... and very powerful. around $60

I have a home recording studio with Sonar X1 and Pro Tools MP9, but that is not what the user wants or needs. Audacity should work without problems and does on virtually every other system but this users. In my original response I suggested Goldwave, which someone later also suggested. But, with the Audacity aborts there seems to be some other PC system or software issue that has to be resolved.
