Best text editor these days?

Hello

I have bee using Linux 6 years. I started to use Windows now and try to learn how power users work with this Os. So im going to ask lots of questions in future

So, what is best text editor these days? I edit php files and stuff with it. Notepad++ ?

I don't know what a PHP is but I use Jarte for a words processing. Kind of like a nice replacement for note pad and word pad.

Best is probably a personal thing. I use Notepad2 and Notepad++

it's not as popular as notepad++, but it works for me!

the only way to find out what's 'best' (for you) is to try a few out and make your own decision.

we're talking about text editors, not word processors. the main difference is that a word processor is geared up for printing, whilst a text editor is for writing code, so it doesn't need fonts, pictures, tables etc.

Programmer's Notepad is fantastic, as is Notepad2. I don't use Notepad++ anymore, as Programmer's Notepad has taken it's place. I replace inbox notepad with Notepad2, and use PN for heavier code writing that doesn't require Visual Studio (not powershell - I use the inbox Powershell ISE for that).

I just took a peek at Programmer's Notepad ... very nice ... I might replace Notepad++ with this. Notepad2 is my default system editor though ...

I'm not a web programmer. But for doing my own site I liked PsPad. Has html tidy. When using New File it has PHP as a file type, so it probably has syntax highlighting at any rate. It's free and has user written plugins. But, yeah "best" is "best for what type of files" and also personal preference. For AutoIt3 and AHK I use the customized SciTE text editors. For general text, like writing Readme files I like EditPadLite7.

Just testing around, I prefer Notepad++ for HTML. Programmer's Notepad is nice though with how you can customize the toolbar and other things are little easier in this regard.

Have only tried Notepad++ in the most cursory way. One thing I like about PsPad is it can use a Project file. The files you have Open are in Tabs across the top. All files in the Project are in a list on the left. To open one of the other files such as a style file or an html page, I just double click in the list. Plus when you set it to come up empty it's not that sluggish. Ok to use as a general spell checker. I have a program I wrote that can paste selected text into another program or save the text to a temp file and pass the file path to a selected program. Makes it pretty easy to use PsPad for spell checking for another editor that lacks it, but has other features I like.

That looks nice. Its translated into finnish too. Thanks! I might use that for heavyer coding.
