Best way to send SMS from Thunderbird?

So, I know it's possible to send texts to phones from an email using SMS. But I have to know their provider to do that, and it gets awkward when I ask that of some people. So, I looked for an SMS extension for Thunderbird, but all I saw were tie-ins to pay-for services. But since SMS has been around for such a long time and it's possible to send one without a pay-for service, surely by now there's a way to do it without knowing the provider?

I have sent sms messages via email for quite a while. If you do not know the provider, just type the number in Google Search, usually the first hit will give you that information. Give it a try and let us know how it works for you.
