Hi, Good Morning,I have a Tosiba C655-S5307 Satellite laptop with a RTL 8188EE and CE lan card installed. I also have a RTL8191SE card and a RTL 8188CE and a Panda USB dongle PAUO6 as spares. The cards connect at 72 and the usb connects at 144 mbps. The usb is faster but the antenna gets in the way. Can I speed up any of these 3, the usb says 300mbps on it I am reunning Win7 Home Premium. I use Att Uverse for internet and run AVG Internet Security. AT&T U-Verse Pace 5268AC UVRGX Gateway Internet Wireless Modem Router. Thanks in advance, Mike

Good evening. Well I picked up an Asus AC53 usb nano wireliess and when I put it in I clicked on it and it said it was connected at 433mbps. My installed cards were at 72mbps and my panda usb wireless was 144mbps. Now everytime I check the speed on the new
asus usb nano it says 144mbps. What decides how fast the mbps will be? Thanks in advance, Mike

Thanks everyone. With the Asus AC53
usb dongle my Toshiba C655 seems to connect at 433mbps most/all of the time but my HP273 laptop only connected at 144mbps all the time. The HP is about 9 or 10 years newer. Doesn't make sense to me. When I connect with the ethernet cable I connect at 1gb which is incredible. I might see if I can route a cable to my living room and my basement to get this speed all the time. Can I splice into the cable that goes to my tv from the router and split it and would that affect the tv? Might not be the right forum to ask this, just let me know. Thanks, Mike

All of the HP laptops I have here came with single band WiFi. 2.4 Ghz. I had to upgrade the adapters in them. Without knowing the exact model number I can't give any more info. All the HPs I have are 2014 and newer.
You should always get a faster connection on a wire.

No, you can't splice an ethernet cable, you would need an ethernet switch or hub.

Just because your ethernet connects at 1GB doesn't mean that's your download speed - that's the link speed. Your actual speed is determined by your ISP - I pay for 200Mb/s for my ISP, my ethernet connects to my router at 1Gb. I will never get faster than 200Mb/s download speeds because my ISP is limiting my connection. I could pay my ISP for 1Gb/s speed but they want too much money and 200Mb/s is more than enough for my needs.

Find out from your parents what speed they are paying for from their ISP. Buy a Gigabit ethernet switch or hub, connect the ethernet from your router to the switch/hub then run 2 ethernet cables from the switch/hub, one for the TV and one for your PC. Remember you will never get faster speeds than what your ISP is providing.

I have that same USB WIFI adapter (ASUS AC53) and get good download speeds even in another room but then I paid for an AC2700 router, not the cheap crap my ISP wanted to charge me a monthly rental fee for. If you want good WIFI invest in a good router, ISP provided is usually basic in features.

You didn't mention the make/model of your router so I can't help you in toubleshooting your WIFI speeds.

Only thing I would add is if possible go for a Switch rather than a Hub as this will give you better signal separation between the ports in use - whereas a hub takes the signal in - it sends it out to all the ports if connected to a device, the Switch actually routes the data to the specific port attached to the device that needs the data

That Realtek adapter is indeed "802.11bgn 2.4 Ghz single-chip" and doesn't have the faster 5.0 Ghz band.
It does have Bluetooth 5.0.

Of course it would help. Not knowing what adapter or computer model that's all I could say.

The dongle is dual band 2.4 Ghz and 5.0 Ghz. Your connecting on the 5.0 band with the dongle which is why it's faster.

though 5ghz wifi connections have shorter range than the 2.4ghz wifi connections (oh yes distance does sort of matter)
so there's some sort of trade-off

2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz Wifi: What Is The Difference? | Guides

I get about 200Mbps download speed with my old Dell DW1525 wifi adapter, connected to a 5g wifi network (yes that pcie card is dual band) (and using any Qualcomm Atheros 10.0.x driver versions like 10.0.0.355 for win7) but only when my PC with the dw1525 wireless adapter is either right near or a few feet away from the wifi router (my router is a Sagemcom 5260 from Spectrum). when the dw1525 wifi adapter is connected to a 2.4ghz wifi network, I get about 80Mbps download speed
